hi guys just ran into some problem with my notebook

its a asus a6ja
core dou cpu 1.66
with ati mobility x1600

i think the x1600 died

my girlfriend has been using it lately, she was doing some school work and suddenly it did a crackling sound from the speaker got some funny symbols around the pointer and then it went all black and all she could see was the pointer.
At the time it was running Windows 7, restarted and just as soon as it logged into windows would go all black and see the pointer, so i went to safe mode, that worked fine did some system restores to a few older restore points and the result was the same.
so i thought i was just W7 gone mad ore something, since i always had driver issues with it ever since i put w7 in it i just thought ok so ill just restore it back to its original XP, easy done since i kept the original restore partition on it.
Easy done just hit the F9 key choose the restore option and 15min later its just like it was out of the box( of course i backed up all files first)

once install complete, restart required and starting windows and i got this.

then this, this must be the funny symbols around the pointer my GF talked about

and this, First time configuration of windows XP little music and animations choosing ur first time settings (u know the drill).
animation starts and just blocks there.

so im thinking some prob with the GPU.

what do you think guys

some opinions pleas
thanks

Ohh yes notebook will be 4 in april so warrenty is over

Looks and sounds like your GPU died.

Yep,same thing happened to me on a nobilis laptop I had.The heatsink was not properly seated and fried the video. This is just the first signs.Mine went back to fine then just went south.I may have a spare gpu.pm me a picture and I will see if I have one in stock on the shelf for sale reasonable priced. They are also readily available on evilbay.
