Could any of the 550D owners here please give me an opinion on whether the sound dampening in this case and closed top opening would help with making a whiny capacitor (or something else that I have not yet figured out which sounds like a high frequency high pitched modem) less audible, if it's located by the back motherboard panel - kind of an unfortunate area, I know. It's possibly the USB slots, or the sound panel under them... or something else nearby.

Sounds like maybe it's coil whine coming from your 7850 video card.

Yes it should help but If it's coming from the rear panel you will still probably hear it out of the rear exhaust. I agree with above post are you sure it's not your gpu? If not can you not rma the mobo?

It's a different computer, not the set-ups in my signature. It's the updated 2nd ("older") set up. It now has an i5 and a different motherboard. The GPU there is GTX580 that I've had for a while, which has no coil whine or any noise issues. It's the motherboard, because I can hear exactly where it's coming from with case side off, putting my ears to different spots. It did not happen with the old motherboard (with all other components being the same), but it's happening with the new one (and its same-model replacement - both "open box" deals from Microcenter... clearly returned for some reason, maybe even this noise).

My 6950 will sometimes wine. I can barely hear it but it is coming out of the back of my case not the top.

Not my GPU! Definitely the motherboard smile.gif I know what GPU coil whine is like. Regardless, I think I've made my decision, thanks all for the replies.

Fractal Design R3 or 550D... more like narrowed down at this point, heh, since I kept reading more reviews. Probably the 550D though - I found that it helps with reducing the noise when I block the top fan opening on the current Antec 902, so a case with no top holes or some filtering there would already be a step forward.

I'll make this easy.
550d:
-Build quality
-Better cooling possible
-Corsair customer service if ever needed

R3:
-Cheaper
