Want to "upgrade" from a HAF-X

Hey guys, I'm looking to upgrade from a HAF-X that I've had since 2010 that has housed two builds now. It's the original one that has USB 3.0 on the front but before 3.0 was finalized for the header pins so it came with the cables that had the actual USB plug to route out the rear water cooling grommets to the MB I/O panel. It's been a great case since I'm air cooled, but I need/want to move my PC on top of my desk and I think it's a bit too tall and probably too heavy. I've been looking at a few things to replace it but I'm not sure really what way to go for sure. I would stay air cooling for now so it needs to fit a Noctua NH-D14 (160mm tall according to them), but I might go liquid with my next build. Either an AIO solution or maybe DIY if I feel adventurous. Only other concern is my video card is EVGA with their ACX cooling not the blower style. I do have an internal DVD-RW but it's almost NEVER used anymore so I could buy an external or if they make them a USB case for it to go in like the external HD cases you can buy.

Some of the stuff I've looked at.......

Corsair Carbide 740
Corsair Crystal 570X
Thermaltake X5
Thermaltake X9
Thermaltake Level 20 MT
EVGA DG-8 series

Nothing new from Coolermaster has really stood out to me, but mostly because I was looking for air cooling originally. I'm running a 4790K mildly OC'd to 4.4 when all cores are active vs just one core. Planning this year to upgrade to an X390 board with a 9xxx series CPU though. I'll be keeping the GTX 1070. RGB is not a huge draw but I wouldn't mind it either which is why there's a few things I mentioned with it. I don't know if I'm looking it the total wrong direction or not though.

One thing I'm undecided on that's making it so hard is whether to go liquid or not. I went with the HAF-X because of the airflow and it seems a lot of newer cases are more lighting and liquid focused and it seems like liquid including AIO's are far surpassing what my old Noctua can do. I should have also mentioned I'm trying to find stuff that can be bought on Amazon since I have a leftover $100 from Christmas to use there. I'm not trying to find something FOR $100, just something that I can put it towards. I know I could also just buy some sort of 240mm AIO or similar and put it in my HAF-X for now while I look for a case. The Thermaltake X series was attractive due to the horizontal positioning and maybe lessening the stress of the Noctua hanging off the mobo, but if I went liquid it wouldn't really be an issue any longer.

Wow, I'm really liking the Luxe tempered glass. Would satisfy my air cooling needs out of the gate and definitely support a ton of water cooling. Too bad Amazon only has 2 through a 3rd party so I might have to go elsewhere for the case but I could burn my Amazon money on something else. Man this decision just got harder lol. Seems like case innovation is pretty stagnant though, I checked out the hardware canucks video reviews on 3 of the Phanteks cases and they're all from like 2014. Guess that's a side effect of the new mobile computing age.

There are two versions of the Luxe the old one from 2014 with plastic side window and last year they came out with a tempered glass version of the Luxe
I have had both versions and i installed LED strips in the first one i had but got tired of it and left them in the old Luxe when i upgraded to the tempered glass Luxe

Nice! Looks like it fits the large noctua coolers just fine as well. Would you say this would fit on top of a large flat corner desk? My HAF-X fit fine WxD-wise when I tested it but it seemed a bit tall. I think the Luxe line is about an inch or slightly more shorter. I'm worried if I go to a true mid-tower that I'm going to lose cooling ability and also I like having room to work but I guess that's not as big a problem since I hardly ever do a lot of work once it's put together.

The Phanteks Evolv X or Pro M might be better option for you if you dont have room for a full tower case but still need lots of room
I almost bought the Evolv X but the lack of a 5,25 bay for my Blu-Ray drive and those plastic slide covers you use to hide the cables as well as the price was things i did not like

Since i threw out my HAF X years ago i cant tell you how they compare size wise
My Luxe is about 55 cm long/deep 56 cm tall and 24 cm wide so that would be 21.65, 22.04 and 9.44 in inches

I've narrowed down things a bit. Looking for some feedback how these might compare and if there's any issues I should be aware of that reviews aren't catching. At this point I'm looking more towards the future and a new build I'm planning, but I'll probably move the current stuff into whatever I get if I don't have the other new parts yet. Assuming the Noctua NH-D14 will fit (I know it fits in at least a few of them). I realize many of these I'll lose the external bay but I'll just adjust and get an external DVD-RW. These are listed in my current preference order. For the new build I'm planning on ditching the Noctua NH-D14 I've been using since 2010 and going either AIO or custom water this time. I've never done water but am interested in it now for the performance over air with newer components and also the reduced mounting stress. Huge air coolers always made me nervous but they seemed necessary vs the at the time mediocre AIO's and intimidating DIY water cooling builds.

Hi Flyinion, I'm in the exact same boat with the same Case (HAF-X purchased in 2010 when it first came out) and same cooler (NH-D14), and I really want to upgrade Cases, but have no idea what to get. I've been looking for a good 6 months, but nothing stands out to me.

I'll start a new thread probably (I think I still want at least 1 x 5.25inch bay and might want to stay with air cooling), but just wanted to ask similar question to the OP. How much better would these newer AIO liquid coolers be over my NH-D14, and also, if the area you live in is dusty (it's very windy here so I regularly have to blow out the dust in my Case with an air compressor), do you have have to regularly clean the radiator? Will I be able to blow out the dust with an Air Compressor?

Oh, and how are these AIO liquid coolers in regards to water leaks? The main reason I've stayed so long with the NH-D14 is because I leave my PC on 24/7 and I was worried about water leaks when I'm not home or asleep. Would you guys still recommend water cooling if you leave the PC on 24/7?
