I would have to be able to link it to the 4.1 setup I have, and from what I understand the external USB DAC is for headphones? I don't really know though, I this is the first time in at least 8 yrs that I've looked at audio devices for PC's. I already have a headphone amp on the desk, but I don't use headphones nearly as much as I used to.

Make sure you are using proper source material (5.1 preferably). Also make sure that you are not using stereo upmix on the old setup.
Honestly the 4.0 speaker setups are museum stuff these days, there are no audio materials available for it and the closest kind of material is 5.1. But you would still be missing the LFE soundtrack as there is no separate subwoofer channel.

Just a reminder: YouTube is not good for surround sound testing. The 5.1 support was added only recently and even then there are hurdles to make it work correctly.

Ppl should learn to add more info to their posts when they ask for help...

The problem for me is I can't check that 4.1 Youtube because I don't have the hardware anymore. I suffered the same fate as you @Dunan Up until Christmas I had the Essence ST, but no PCI on the new board so it's just sitting there (along with a USB TV tuner that still accepts all UK channels but no driver). I ended up ditching surround, got a USB dac/amp with headphone and line out and will eventually replace my ageing 5.1 reciever with a stereo amp.

I'm not sure ASUS is in quite the same league as Auzentech though, at least in the driver department, I doubt a new STX will support any more configurations than your onboard - Probably a better chance with the OMEGA eCLARO but that's only a wild guess though. I don't think flexibility is catered to the way it used to be. I'd be 100% certain before getting anything.

Do you get sound from the rear when you use the test function in the Windows speaker settings?

If you're thinking about a soundcard it might be better to stick with the onboard you have and update your powered speakers instead, I haven't had to buy PC speakers for as long as you though, doubt I can be much help.

Some of the reviews I've read about the Asus is that it's pretty high quality components and is supposed to be on par or surpass the prelude, but I'd have no real way of knowing unless I hear it myself. Apparently that is Asus's audiophile card. The eCLARO I was looking at as well, because from one of the amazon reviews there was a person in my exact same situation - 4.1 klipsch/auzentech (not prelude, I forget the model) setup, and cant get the rears to work on the motherboard audio. He commented that the klipsch indeed will work with the eCLARO so if if the Asus wouldn't work, the eCLARO would be the choice.

When I run the test sounds through either the windows sound or realtek control panel, they come thru all speakers and can test each speaker individually. It's not the source material that is the issue, I was playing resident evil 2 remake, and I still got nothing out of the rears while on the PC with the auzentech, everything comes out of all speakers as it should.

Anyone have any opinions on the HT OMEGA eCLARO? It's probably not on par with the Asus but its got to be better than a sound blaster.

As of right now, I cant get the rear speakers to work with any onboard audio regardless of the onboard setting (quadrophonic, etc).

The Asus has RCA outputs on the card I believe and a 4pin connection and that's where I run into issues with that card.

Do you guys have any suggestions I can try or how I can get the Asus to work with the Klipsch 4.1?
If you can't find an acceptable replacement, and have case space, and don't mind the ungainly appearance, they do sell pcie to pci adapters: https://www.amazon.com/Sintech-PCI-E...gateway&sr=8-8

Well I tried some sound comparisons with the onboard audio on the MSI board vs the auzentech and it's really no comparison, the auzentech is much cleaner and clearer sounding and now I'm really anxious to try something else.

I guess it comes down to the eCLARO or the Asus, does anyone have experiences with either and have an opinion on which one is better?

Haven't heard of it, researching now. I just need it to work with the promedia 4.1's. I was about to take the plunge on the eCLARO but I'll check out this card first.

Edit: checked out the EVGA, it's only a stereo card. I think I'll stick with the eCLARO for now as the one as I do more research.

I went ahead and got the eCLARO, it seemed to be the best choice for the 4.1 promedia. It probably won't be as good as the prelude but I don't need it to be. Thanks everyone for your help!
