Which RAM to buy?

Hey all,

Looking for 2x8GB to use with a 9900K. Haven't decided on a motherboard yet. Would like to try something other than 3200 C14 since I already own a couple sets. I'm looking at the following:

Trident Z:
4266 C19 1.40V $220
4133 C19 1.35V $210
3733 C17 1.35V $210
3600 C16 1.35V $185

Patriot Viper:
4400 C19 1.45V $200

I'm assuming these are all b-die. Which would be the best for overall performance and overclocking? Are the more expensive kits any better binned?

I'd be open to other suggestions as well.

Hi,
Nice prices but I'd verify b-die or not prices look too good to be true :)
I personally just went 3600C16 they seem fine CptSpig has the same set although I don't oc mine just happy at rated speed and timings but 4x8 price was 450.us a lot more than what you posted.

Hi,
I believe @The Pook has 4133 that seem to work okay.

Ye, I have "F4-4133C19D-16GTZKWC" but my board isn't the best for RAM and 4133 is about all it can handle.

Seems to top out at 4133 17-18-18-34 2T at 1.4v and 1.25v VCCIO/SA, playing around at 3866 - 4000 with tighter timings currently but haven't gotten it dialed in yet.

Lots of good information here, thanks for the replies all. Interesting to know on the Z390 Taichi, I was considering it as a board. It's a very good value at $200.

The Z390 Dark (which I am leaning towards) has sticks up to 4600 on its QVL!

https://www.evga.com/support/motherboard/

I'd have to wonder if my 9900K and its IMC could support such a speed. I wouldn't buy 4600 though, the value quotient on 16gb kits above ~$230 drops extremely sharply lol. The trident Z 4600 bling kit is like $500 : O but it would match the gold on the Titan LOL

I do like the 3600c15, the latency in ns is lower than even 3200c14, but it's only available in 1 kit in an oddball color

Hi,
Yes oc'ing memory is probably marginal gains for a lot of fuss without even viewing the youtube video which I think I watched a while back.
But the op here is not a novice either :)

Happy medium for me was 3600C16 although I've read 3600C15 is supposed to be a little better
Last I read @Jpmboy was looking for the 3600C16 too for his new omega board.

It can be hit or miss with any of these kits. I only have 3600c15 and 4133c19. The 3600 kit is much better and both sticks clock very close to each other. The 4133 kit, one stick clocks about 80mhz higher than the other and 75mhz lower than the 3600 kit

Decided to buy the Trident Z 4133 19-19-19 1.35V, seemed like a good combination of speed, price, and voltage.

Hi,
Looks like you're board shopping now :thumb:

#16 ·
Not anymore, ordered the EVGA Z390 Dark :D

On average this is true but in the short section of gameplay you are CPU limited the FPS gain would be 10+FPS as is shown at 720p.
Combined with CPU OC and tweaked sub timings it all stacks up, unless your completely GPU bottlnecked.

I'm not looking at your links, I'm sure Toms Hardware is full of useful information. I'm telling you that the terminology you are using is wrong and you have it backwards. 720p testing shows CPU bottlenecks, 4K shows GPU bottlenecks.

That's day 1 knowledge, friend.

Hi,
Not sure what the point is
Purchases are a done deal so thread is solved so op is not going to change anything I'll bet a dollar to a donut :)

#39 ·
I realized I was bottle necked and returned it for DDR4-2133 ;)

Yes it is possible to be GPU bottlnecked at 720p as all lowering the res does is reduce GPU load vs higher res not eliminate it so some games will remain GPU bottlnecked at 720p just as some can be CPU bottlnecked at 4k, at least in some of the gameplay as a game can change from GPU to CPU bottlneck depending on the direction your facing and what is being rendered on screen.
With those test from tom Strange brigade is almost completely GPU bottlnecked at 720P with 2133MHz showing minimal performance hit and 3400-4400 showing no FPS change from memory at 720P

Here is a little test I ran a while back showing a CPU bottlneck at 720p and 4k has no change in FPS and no change in CPU usage only a increase in GPU usage with increased resolution but for that benchmark I had to downclock my CPU to 800MHz as it is a very GPU heavy test.

Here is some CPU vs RAM tests I ran back in 2016, keep in mind the only thing faster RAM is doing is improving the IPC of the CPU as it reduces the time it waits for files not in the cache.
https://www.overclock.net/forum/180...0c11-2133c9-ddr4-2133c15-3000c12-4000c17.html
Arma III was completely CPU limited in that 1080p test as was Fallout 4 although testing these games on a different section of the map can change that to a GPU bottlneck, while R6 Siege was heavily GPU limited.

So in ARMA III ~12% increase in CPU clock speed from 4.2GHz to 4.7GHz is increasing FPS by ~6% while increasing RAM from 3200c14 to 3866c16 increases FPS by ~7%.
Each on there own a small increase but together it is very noticeable.

Finally got the Z390 Dark setup running, turns out one of the dimms in the 4133c19 kit is DOA :(

#45 ·
Hi,
Dang that bites :/

#46 ·
Yep I tested it on X299 as well, It don't work anywhere lol

#47 ·
Hi,
At least it was doa instead of dying later on you're still in the sellers rma window instead of going through g-skill.

#53 ·
Hi,
Could of been a prior rma'ed set they couldn't confirm bad so they sent it back out.

#54 ·
Maybe I will buy a different kit and just return these so I don't have to be without them for a while. Maybe the 4266c19 kit? More suggestions welcome :)

Hi,
lol gluten for punishment

#56 ·
is OP gluten intolerant? think you mean glutton :laughings

That's not how it works. There's more than one timing affecting performance. I can very easily make my 4133 perform better at CL18 than CL17 just by playing with secondaries/tertiaries.

Sent my defective sticks back to Noobegg, guess I need to buy something now lol

Hey fellas, i've the same question, i'd rather ask here then open a new topic BUT i'll be going for the Asus Maximus XI GENE motherboard for the 9900k(i've a thing for mATX mobos :p).
QVL list very good, it supports almost all Gskill Trident Z variants. I'm between 4000 C19, 4133 C19 and 4266 C19(they are priced very similar here).
I've read the thread but i still can't decide. By the way can't find any 3600 C15 rams here so i think these there are my best options. As you can see from my rig below, it is time for a upgrade and let that 1080Ti stretch it's legs a bit. :))

I've been happy with my 4133 CL19 TridentZ. Does 15-17-17-34 @ 4000 and 16-18-18-34 @ 4133 at 1.5v.

If they're all the same price then get the 4266.
