3000 vs 3600mhz for $15 more?

Looking at upgrading from my 8gb 2666mhz to 16gb and it doesnt make sense for me to by another matching stick as that specific one is like $40.

The ram is for my home media server that I want to turn into a dedicated server for video games like Space Engineer which is CPU and RAM intense like Minecraft.

16gb 3000mhz CL15 is $65
16gb 3600mhz CL18 is $80
Both sets are Corsair Vengeance. Links below. The 3200mhz CL16 is $70 which may be the sweet spot.

The chips will be running on a Z290 i3-6100 that I am looking to upgrade to an it or i7.

https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-PC4-28800-Desktop-Memory/dp/B07RM39V5F/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?keywords=16gb+3600mhz+ram&qid=15679 81342&s=gateway&sr=8-6

Thanks in advance for the advice

All the speeds you listed are probably running Hynix chips and can probably all OC to the same speed as each other.

They all have a similar latency at there rated speed.
Using this rough calculation they look the same but depending on sub timings they will be different and the 3600 kit may have the edge.
3000\15=200
3200\16=200
3600\18=200
The last kit will also have a little more bandwidth but that alone may not be enough to justify the price increase.

If you are willing to OC this $75 kit using micron chips should hit 3600+ with tighter timings than the kits using Hynix chips
https://www.amazon.com/Ballistix-Spo...gateway&sr=8-1

If the G.Skill rep pops in do you have any kits using Micron E-die priced around $75?

Thanks for the quick reply.
What about the same set for 3200 but CL16 for $78?

hopefully you mean Z270 and not Z390, lol.

get the cheapest kit, the timings basically cancel out any benefit the extra speed gives and if you're not going to put in the time to OC and are just setting XMP then who makes the IC in each kit is irrelevant.

Haha yeah Z270.
I used to be all about overclocking.. lately I have been too lazy to stress test.

What you say the 3000mhz corsair for $65 or the 3200mhz ballistic for $78

telling OP to buy B-Die for his dual core i3 when he already said he doesn't plan to OC is the opposite of worthwhile.

Agreed.. I doubt there will be much benefit to spending more and OC on a dedicated server.. I'd probably see more gain from 32gb of ram than fast 16gb of ram

could buy a used Z170 board for cheap and BCLK OC your i3 6100 if you need more CPU oomph though

probably less hassle to just grab a used CPU at that point though, there are ES Skylake i7 6400Ts and ES Skylake 6700Ks on eBay for ~$90.
