Q: What is an IC?
A: An IC is the Integrated Circuit on the RAM, the chips the RAM uses.
Q: Why does an IC matter?
A: The IC of the RAM is everything. Brand name does not matter, the IC does, the IC determines how good the RAM is, basically what MHz it does at certain voltages and what timings. There can be two brands that use the same IC and it's the exact same RAM except for different brand heatspreaders.
Q: I see PC2-5300 RAM and PC2-6400 RAM that use the same IC. Doesn't that mean it will clock the exact same and I should get the PC2-5300 for the reduced price?
A: In general that is the theory but the PC2-6400 may be higher binned and therefore overclock better? It was tested at PC2-6400 Speeds (400 MHz) while the PC2-5300 (333 Mhz) was only tested stable at those speeds. It is basically luck of the draw, I have seen people get PC2-5300 Ballastix that will overclock just as good as high binned PC2-8500 Tracers. Think of it like CPU's, some CPU's clock very good and some don't, but they still are the same chip.
Q: Should I get PC2-8500 or PC2-6400 if they are the same IC
A: I would suggest the PC2-6400 because 400 MHz is a good enough speed for RAM to be tested stable at that they will likely clock just as good as the PC2-8500 if they are they same IC.
Q: What are the best overclocking IC's?
A: MicronD9GMH and MicronD9GKX. D9GMH likes tigher timings while GKX likes higher FSB. The standard is going to be around 4-4-4 450 MHz (DDR2-900) @ 2.1V for D9GMH, give or take same MHz depending on how well binned they are. D9KX standard will be around 650 MHz 5-5-5-15 @2.2V give or take a little depending on how well binned they are.
Q: What does "Handpicked"
A: It means the RAM was picked from a batch of many as the best. Will overclock better than non handpicked. Special Edition RAM is a lot of times handpicked.
Q: How come I hear a lot of store of Micron RAM dying?
A: It seems that the high end Micron IC's have had problems dying at high voltages more than any other IC but you only hear those stories. Most people's are fine like mine for as long as they use them. I would not go over 2.1V for daily use without a fan on D9GMH or D9GKX. it should not be a deciding factor when picking MicronD9 RAM.
Q: What is an average overclocking IC?
A: Promos and MicronD9GCT are good but not great like MicronD9GMH/GKX. Some people like Promos because you can get highly binned promos that clock very well. Promos are voltage friendly and don't die at all really.
Q: What IC should I avoid?
A: Avoid Elpedia and Infeneon
Q: What company has the best RAM for the best price.
A: Depends on your opinion. But I think Crucial, end of story. Crucial uses all Micron chips in their RAM. That's because they are a subdivision of Micron, they have to use Micron. Their D9GMH chips are in their cheap PC2-6400 series. Team Group and G.SKILL are also very good. OCZ has good high end RAM but may be a bit too much. Decide yourself by comparing IC's. You will find Crucial wins.
Q: What Company should I avoid?
A: Corsair. You get the same D9GMH/GKX from Crucial that you do from Corsair Dominators for so much less money. Stay away from Corsair. Their mid low-end stuff is not good. Their good stuff is way too much. PQI, Wintec AMPO. If you haven't heard of it, don't buy it is a good rule.
Q: If RAM has multiple IC's how do I know what one I will get?
A: Luck of the draw.
Q: How do I find out what IC my RAM has if I don't know?
A: Take off the heatspreaders and it will be written on the IC itself. Be careful your warranty may be voided. If your not careful you could end up frying the RAM.
Q: Gah, what do I buy?
