I wonder if there is much difference between the i5-2400 and i5-2500......
I would just hope that the BIOS has the codes to recognize it......

If it wasnt sold with the system it may not work, depending on wether the motherboard was used in another model like a vostro you could get lucky with a bios update or microcode update

I have an optiplex 990 with a 2400 and its ok, deffinatly better than a laptop.
My gx620 usff on the otherhand is stuck to proprietary eveverthing although I swapped out the smithfield for a presler, the only difference was the L2 cache

Will the OptiPlex 390 take it? It sounds like a nice upgrade, but will you really notice that much of a bump in performance? I hope you have a nice SSD and video card in that box before making this upgrade!

I believe the 390 only supports Sandy Bridge processors not ivy bridge. I was looking the BIOS update and couldnt see a line saying the added additional support when i was considering upgrading my 390.

They realised a Dell Optiplex 3010 i think with the Ivy Bridge ones. Looks very similar so no idea if there would be anyway to get a hacked bios for it.

Always worth a try to see if it works for you though.

Hi Carwarz,

I have a Dell Optiplex 390. I just upgraded from an i3-2100 to and i5-2400. It went well and got the increase in performance I expected.

I can find only a few places on the internet that shows an optiplex 390 with an i7-2600. Did you buy your optiplex with that processor or did you upgrade to the i7-2600?

Have you upgraded to the I7-3770? If so, how did it go?

Thanks for your help.

Best,

Mark
