In the higher end, money is best spent on doing it yourself, but exactly how little can you spend before it’s not worth it?

Are systems built around the latest I3, Pentium, and Athlon chips worth it more than a prebuilt? Or can you do a $300.00 tower that’s worth it more than a Dell?

Would you be happy to go second hand? Could probably build something a bit better than the prebuilt if you go back a few generations
