Hi mates!

Not much has passed since I finished 'The Wooden Cheese', and my thirst for modding is already awaking.

This time, I'm building the 1/(The Wooden Cheese). Yes, that is, the tiniest case where I can fit a 360mm radiator.

And as a bonus, this time I'm mounting a 22", 1920x1080 screen into the case! Yes, you heard right, it will go IN the case. Not in a stand besides, not hanging in a wall. The screen will be a PART of it! thumb.gif

Prelude:

I want a case that is that, simply a case. No exposed front, no windows, no LEDs, no nothing. Just a case. And you guessed right, that one I'm looking at is the Fractal Define Mini. A plain steel cubicle, the only sign of being a computer case are the cables coming from the rear side of it. And that slight humm from the water pump.

It means that the radiator WILL have to fit inside the case. Will the inside get modded? You bet it will.

Right now, it's only a brainstorm, and the mod itself will start once the new Komodo processors make an appearance, or when the Ivy Bridge second gen processors become available. Depends on their respective prices and performances.

Scrap the above! At least partially. The case is no more a Fractal Define Mini. I'm going, once again, custom.
This time, I will use 2mm thick aluminium. Brushed. Sprayed white. Two fine orange strips.

So, to match the above, some things have had to change. The standing of the case being among them. This time, the case will stand on its side. Flat motherboard.

And keep scraping! This time we're here for real. The victim will be an already ordered heavily modded Lian Li PC-A05NB. No scratch as it was WAY over budget to do something decent with aluminium.

The Victim:

  • A perfectly parallelepipedal Fractal Define Mini.

There isn't any victim no more.

Yes there is!!
  • A Sleek and minimalist... Lian Li PC-A05NB!!

The list below is what will be in the end on the case. As for now, the hardware that'll be in is under this list.
Future Parts (Click to show)
The insides:

Processor:
  • AMD Bulldozer Rev.2, Trinity APU, or Intel Ivy Bridge revised.

Motherboard:
  • Micro ATX form factor.
  • CrossfireX/SLi compliant.
  • Top end chipset.
  • ASUS/AsRock/Gigabyte. Not an UD7/UD9, not a RoG/Sabertooh/TURF. With the very exception of the Gene series.

Videocard:
  • AMD Southern Islands sub-top end, most certainly Radeon HD7950. Possibly a pair of them. Highest VRAM versions will be chosen. Although if HD8 series is out, that will be the choice. Same goes for nVIDIA.

nVIDIA's Kepler is a possibility, although less likely than AMD's offering. In any case, GTX660/GTX760s will be the chosen ones, and like AMDs, with the highest possible VRAM.

Power Supply Unit:
  • Corsair, Seasonic or NZXT. 750W or 850W version. To be determined by the power hungriness of the videocards and/or current unit pricepoints. Given they have similar prices, Seasonic will be the choice, no doubt.

Cooling System(s):
  • EK Waterblocks Supreme HF Full Copper.
  • Aquacomputer AquagratiX GPU waterblocks. Danger Den is also a possibility.
  • EK Waterblocks CoolStream XT360 radiator.
  • 3x Silverstone AP121 fans. The 25mm thick fan that offers the highest static pressure without exceeding 30dBa will be chosen.
  • Phobya DC12-400 water pump (if still alive).

This are the parts that'll temporarily (for at least a year) go inside the monstah:

The insides:

Processor:
  • AMD Phenom X6 1055T

Motherboard:
  • ASUS M4A89GTD Pro/USB3

Videocard:
  • Sapphire Radeon HD5870 1GB RMAd the card and got a HD6950 2GB on return!! Now I can hold until HD8 series smile.gif

Power Supply Unit:
  • NOX Sonar 780W (Kingwin 80+ 750W)

Cooling System(s):
  • EK Waterblocks Supreme HF Full Copper.
  • Ghettomodded ZM-WB4 CPU block to fit on the HD5870.
  • EK Waterblocks CoolStream XT360 radiator.
  • 3x Yate Loon High controlled by a Scythe 3.5" bay, 12W per channel, 4 channel controller.
  • Phobya DC12-400 water pump).

So far, that's it. Pics will come when money starts to flow and hardware comes out. Until then, nothing's gonna be shown up.

Something I can advance right now, is that the case WILL have a custom paint job. Expect a white case with orange strips.
Also, expect no LEDs AT ALL.

The PSU will be 100% sleeved on ALL visible cabling, using Paracord 550. Mixed black and white, such as the one I did on The Wooden Cheese, but with higher quality heatshrink. Not now, as if will use The Wooden Cheese's PSU. I'll fix the sleeving though.

Updates
Legacy Update List (Click to show)
This two updates here are kept as legacy, as they no longer belong to the project. Nonetheless, they might be interesting, so here I leave them.

Aw, thanks <3

I don't order the case right now and start modding the hell outta it because my current board doesn't fit in it tongue.gif

If I had a mATX board, be sure I'd be playing with it right now biggrin.gif

Things start to roll... The project has received the approval of the Major Council (aka Dad, who will lend me the power tools, and That Guy From the Aluminium Shop, who will bend the sheet for me using his alu folder)

So I've rendered the .skp file I used to showcase the mod.

This renders were done to test an anthracite grey color, looks good, but far too classy for a computer. Will render it in glossy white with the full case on.

Hahaha, that roleplay level was pretty good xDD

I'm playing with Twilight materials and rendering some artwork on the case itself, will post it as soon as I'm convinced wink.gif

Edit: There we go!

Edit: MOAR RENDARZ!!!

Now I tested a different surface finish and different colored stripes. It no longer looks like a microwave!! biggrin.gif

Plus I found I can add a slim DVD drive. Will have to find a slot loaded, don't want a faceplate popping out of the case ¬¬

So, OP updated, and here we go! A drastic direction change, once again! This time it's definitive, rest assured smile.gif

This is what I ordered:

  • Lian Li PC-A05NB
  • LG IPS235V (to substitute the E2250V, which will be going into this mod)
  • Scythe Fan Controller (4 channel, 12W p.channel)
  • 3x Yate Loon High Speed
  • Alphacool 3/8" hose, Semitransparent White.

Should be here by Friday, so stay tuned!! biggrin.gif

Ah! And I also gifted mysef a Dremel 300, as if it was already time I owned one of those... It would've saved me a lot of time in the past having one, so I ain't gonna let the opportunity go away once more. Dremelz0rz there we go!
