Concept and Plan (or lack thereof)

Ok guys and gals and overclockers of all ages. I was inspired by my last build to delve a bit deeper into Steampunk for my next build. I also like having a Linux PC to play around on and use for moving files on and off iOS devices... However my [Orange Box] running Ubuntu 11.04 is a old P4 dell running at the speed of smell, with a 8400 GPU and its slow even for web browser uses. So something else is needed but I didn't want to spend a crapton of money either.

So enter a day last week when I was on Ebay (I know bad idea) and saw a Intel Xeon 5050 dual core 3.0 Ghz going for 9.99 Buy it now and made a impulse buy. So I have 2 of these things and my idea was to rebuild [Orange Box] with one and maybe make a second cheap build to update the inlaws old gateway.

However after some research I found I had purchased a pair of the older LGA771 Xeons based on a "Dempsey Core" And NetBurst micro-architecture. This why I should stay off ebay late at night and not bid on deals that are about to expire. Anyway, since I'm sure some of you have Dozed off at this point I'll cut to the chase. the seller also had a pair of Xeon 5150 for sale for the same price and they are by all accounts a far better chip due to the fact that they are based on Core Micro-architecture. I swaped out for those instead.

Then I bought a Motherboard out of a HP Workstation (xw6400) and It also had a couple of the Xeon 5150 chips already in it.

I found a couple Heatsinks out of a Socket 771 Mac Pro that I will have to make a custom back plate for.

I also purchased 8GB of FB-Dimm Server memory and Got a WHOLE "nother" education on server ram and the variables of server ram and DDR2 in general.

I got the mother board in and with those heatsinks and Dual CPU it was not going to fit into my old case or the brand new NZXT Source 210 that I bought also on a whim a month ago.

I have always had a thing for big old Beige server towers. Well I found something almost like that. It came in a ATX and a Server format.

The Inwin Q2000

As you can see this thing has PLENTY of room and all sorts of potential for mods.

I'll have unboxing shots and Parts layout at the end of the week.

Parts List So Far

CPU: Xeon Socket 771 5150 Dual Core X2 $20
CPU: Xeon Socket 771 5345 Quad Core X2 $35

MoBo: HP XW6400 Motherboard System Board 436925-001 $33
Ram: 8GB 4X2GB 2RX4 PC2 5300F 667MHZ DDR2 $36
Heatsinks: Apple Mac Pro Heatsink A1186 $29
Case: Inwin Q2000 $53
Edit:
HDD: 1TB Samsung F3 $69
DVD: Liteon DVD Drive $15
SSD: 120 GB OCZ Vertec 3 Sata 3 $79

Fans: 6 CM 120mm fans, 2 are the turbine type $48
PSU: Seasonic X750 Gold $99
PSU: TX 750 $50

Old Stuff I am Reusing Not much at this point lol

PSU: Antec Basiq 550 Watt
HDD: couple old ones I have laying around.
DVD: Samsung out of my current build

I plan on getting a couple 1TB drives and a 120 GB SSD for this build once I get it up and running. Bought 1 each allready.

The Plan

Update this old case and pile of parts with a steampunk theme and a Giant window(s) I will for sure be relocating the HD mounts to the top of the case a building a "Ram Air Intake" for the TWO CPU's

So glad to be back modding...

Cheers, Alder

Ok, big news... The Case came in... Also I went on a bit of a Ebay frenzy and now the build is going to have two Quad Core Xeon 5345 processors. 8 old school cores!!

Ok, I promised some unboxing pics and here they are. I was in a hurry didn't get off work untill 8pm last night and didn't get them uploaded then. But here we go

This thing is HUGE!!! Here it is next to a Gateway full sized tower that I am fixing for someone right now.

Some shots of the inside.

Even this huge case will need a bit of modding to take a 5870.

Did I mention its a removable motherboard tray?

Ok, there you have it. One giant Beige clean slate to began modding. More updates tonight,

Cheers, Alder

Thanks Shadow. Yeah I have some big (yet inexpensive) mods planned. I found some AC fans with big rounded grills, I have some Cork to work in, I have a couple of good sized chrome pieces. And If I can come up with a 750 watt or more PSU I may even throw some extras in.

I found some replacement screws for the heatsinks today, Apple used a odd threads and a hex head on them and I could not find a allen wrench long enough to use on these heatsinks. They are about 5 1/2 inches high and I ended up going with a 6-32 SS bolts and nut with a fiber washer to keep it from grounding out. I'm hoping to test my 6 CPU's out and check all my parts on this build in the next couple days.. updates soon...
