Someone needs to buy and mod this for science!

Well on a recent trip to the Ewaste facility i got one of these for free.
a whole 90kgs of sun micro systems server on wheels.

im super keen to mod this into something crazy. i even got 2 17 inch LCD panels that were tossed due to blown inverters, i may build them into the case.

Loving the beige mod club. all about hunting for retro electronics for cheap/free and doing something awesome with them.

This case built this case out of 1970s kit that i got for FREE and it cost me in the end was a tin of black spray paint and a few work hours

and i guess lastly while im at it. this is the latest freebee i have managed to get my hands on: a Focus FK 5001

My next mod will be something like trash to treasure.

I can already tell you that I found an old customized Dell and took it home.

I gutted it, and I plan to do a mod with less than 200 USD (things cost a lot in Switzerland poke.gif )

It will be named BETA and if it comes out nice and works, I plan to have it in the amateur mod competition wink.gif

Sorry for my bad english...

So what happened was, I made a tactical error. I got it running and showed it to my son. Prying it out of his hands long enough to work on it turned out to be beyond my abilities. wink.gif

But fear not! This week I transplanted the guts of it to a temporary case so I can finish modding it. Expect to see some photos next week. thumb.gif

I can totally understand your son's thinking, in fact I had a very similar moment when making an HTPC out of my old laptop! biggrin.gif
Can't wait to see what you'll do next!

Haha, yeah if you go questing for free things at various places that have E waste you will eventually get something nice.
i also managed to get a whole pile of valve state instruments once also, still have them at home they are awesome.

Just keep asking around but don't got back too often. some places tend to get a little upset if you keep asking for old electronic freebees. unless however you happen to take all the freebees in one go, as it saves them having to call in a company to take it away. i did this once tongue.gif it took me 4 whole car loads to get the stuff home.

yeah the Sun server came will all its original hardware only things missing where the HDDs. it has 2 1.2GHz single core processors and 16 sticks of RAM making a total of 4Gb. it booted up but it wasn't really much use since it's sun microsystems own CPU (ultraspar 2 i think) it which only supports the Solaris OS.
I made a tear down thread for it here: https://www.overclock.net/t/1508063/sunfire-v880-server-teardown-chassis-to-be-retrofitted-for-cnc-mill-control

The mill control bit is still up in the air (minimal cash). but each PSU can deliver 48 volts at 15Amps so its perfect for CnC stepper motors
