Haha I know right! biggrin.gif
Sounds like they were absolute rubbish as well even when they were new!
Just looking inside it has only one fan to cool the whole computer!
I'll be adding a few more fans as otherwise it will probably overheat as mentioned before! biggrin.gif
I wonder how much people paid for them back then, probably in the thousands as I believe the XPS was one of Dells more expensive models? Not sure though... biggrin.gif

Mine had one fan to cool both the case and the CPU. The CPU had this crummy passive aluminum heatsink on it that was only slightly heavier than an empty soda can. A plastic shroud covered the CPU to force the case fan to draw air through the fins of the heatsink. It was a very bad cooling solution. On hot summer days the machine would crash all day long. After some research I realized I needed to ditch the plastic shroud and install a third-party active cooler on the CPU. That resulted in far greater stability on summer days, though the system was never crash-free. It just wasn't a very good computer.

Yeah mine has the slot mount Pentium 3 with a tiny little heatsink and that plastic shroud!
I'm going to rip it all out and replace the mainboard/processor with something half decent! biggrin.gif

I kept all the Windows 98 SE desktop icons and system sounds from that Dell Dimension and still use some of them. For all my rigs the desktop icons for "My Computer" and "Network Neighborhood" have always been the Dell's default Windows 98 SE icons since 1999. So the old Dell lives on in a sense. Even for the computers I've built for other people I always stick those two icons on the desktop. It's kind of a goofy personal trademark.

Add me. I have been refurbishing old systems for years. (Project NeeNeetoys) and want to get back into it. I am disabled but will still try to build a few more. I just purchased a Dell 790 with the i3 H2 chip and plan on shucking the sff case. I build most my rigs for folding and sell them to upgrade when I can. I do it on a budget and know how to make eye candy out of nothing. smile.gif
