Sorry about the lack of progress. I just finished my second semester and a few months back I was lucky and got a job at the best machine shop in town. So between full time school and nearly full time work my hobbies have been set aside for now. Actually just the other day I was thinking about this project. Even with all the new equipment that's available to me now between work and school I'm still not 100% sure how to execute the design in my head. If I switched to some other material I could probably do it but I'd really like it to be aluminum. I take a welding class this fall, maybe that will inspire me.

No worries, we can wait; your education is far more important! Hang onto that machine shop job; you can get a valuable education there as well.
