[Build Log] Fast n' Cheap

[Build Log] Fast n' Cheap:

I finally cracked and I went for an all new build.

Here is what I obtained for a 1440p, 144Hz Gaming Computer:

01. RYZEN 7 3700X - Canada Computers $409.00 (will redeem The Outer Worlds with the CPU) (3 year warranty)
02. Noctua NH-D15 SSO2 D-Type Premium CPU Cooler, NF-A15 x 2 PWM Fans - newegg.ca $99.95 (6 year warranty)
03. ASUS TUF GAMING X570-PLUS AMD AM4 X570 ATX - Canada Computers $189.00 (3 year warranty)
04. G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4 3600 16-19-19-39 CAS Latency 16 1.35V - newegg.ca $183.99 (lifetime)
05. MSI Radeon RX 5700 XT - Canada Computers $458.88 (will redeem Borderlands 3 with the GPU) (3 year warranty)
06. Corsair Force Series Gen.4 PCIe MP600 500GB NVMe M.2 SSD - Amazon.ca $184.87 (5 year warranty)
07. Seagate BarraCuda ST3000DM008 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" HDD - newegg.ca $101.99 (2 year warranty)
08. Veddha Grider Case Water Cooling Motherboard Test Bench Open Air Frame - Amazon.ca $106.14 (1 year warranty)
09. Fractal Design Ion+ 860P 80 PLUS Platinum Certified 860W Full Modular Compact ATX Power Supply with UltraFlex Cables - PC Canada $175.99 (10 year warranty)
10. Logitech G502 Hero High Performance Gaming Mouse - Amazon.ca $75.06 (1 year warranty)
11. PulseLabz Challenger Gaming Chair - PulseLabz $274.99 (10 year warranty)

Grand Total (Taxes + Shipping): $2489.68

The mouse and chair broke recently, so I had to replace them. If you don't need those then the total cost including the $20 rebate on the GPU would have been $1949.82. If I would have reused my EVGA G2 PSU the total would have been $1875.24. Now if I would have completely pillaged my current PC and also reused the HDD, Case and Cooler (probably would have needed an AM4 bracket) the grand total would have been $1521.87. I had a budget of ~$1500 in mind but the sales kept coming and once you start you can't stop!

The Optical Drive will be an LG Blu-ray R/W that I received as a replacement from LG for a defective one and has been sitting in a drawer.

I plan on doing a lot of experimenting, sort of what I did with "The Hawaiian Heat Wave" (in sig), so stay tuned as I still await shipment on some components. Refer to posts #13 and #28 for ideas on what's to come from this build log.

Let me know what you think and leave a comment!

BUILD INDEX:

01. How can I tell if my RAM is compatible with my Motherboard? (page 03 - post #021)

02. Register your computer hardware. (page 03 - post #024)

03. PulseLabz Challenger gaming chair assembly. (page 03 - post #25)

04. Join relevant clubs for your build. (page 04 - post #32)

I've fulfilled the orders as described above.

The only two components that I was able to obtain locally were the mobo and CPU:

I did ask for constructive critisism. But none was forthcoming; either I was spot on, I posted too late last night or people are generally apathetic.

Anyway, I did catch a potential error in my build. I originally ordered the Crucial MX500 M.2 2280 500GB SATA III 3D NAND Internal SSD which has a different interface connector then the M.2 Gen3 & 4:

I noticed that there are limited vendors of M.2 Gen4 PCIe x4. All I could find are M.2 Gen4s from Corsair, Patriot, Gigabyte and Seagate. I think early days which also makes them more pricey.

I assume M.2 Gen3, where the interface connector is similar to M.2 Gen4, will work on X570 mobos?

Let me know what you think so far!

Let me know of what you think so far!
PCIe is backwards compatible,to my knowledge,I don’t think you’ll encounter any problems..
After all,it was shown that gen 4 works pretty fast on gen 3,I don’t see why it shouldn’t work the other way around..

Nice build you got planned out there , hope you get the parts quickly

In my research, I ran into the Hardware Unboxed video where they discuss the best X570 mobos in certain price ranges and in my case the notable ones where from Asus and Gigabyte. The Asus TUF looked like the overall winner especially when it came to temps and it helped that it was the cheapest in price.

The TUF is a good choice indeed, the VRMs are solid plus it has troubleshooting features that others don’t ,which makes it a win in my book...

I have been planning to go Ryzen in both my systems for a while now,but the(only)X570 mATX from asrock is..anemic to say the least...It can accommodate with proper VRM cooling up to a 8-core,at least thats what I’m comfortable with putting in it,should I go that road in the end...

My dream would be a 3900X in my main system and a 3600 in the missus’ system....but that’s a long way from happening anytime soon, lol

But,back to your real build now,I’m guessing the 5700XT will be the Gaming one , or perhaps the
Mech OC?

I delayed my build for a while being put off by the general fleecing when it came to hardware and software. I managed to save quite a bit and decided to only splurge now.

Any new build hinged on finding a reasonably priced video card. So to answer your question, I purchased an MSI RX 5700 XT (reference). Yes, I'm hearing a loud gasp now.

The card was the cheapest 5700 XT I could find in Canada. I bought it from Canada Computers for $458.88 (after a $20 rebate). I figure since it comes with Borderlands 3 and I was considering buying the game ($80 CAD) to play with my daughter and son in-law, I managed to gnash and claw my way to a card for under $400. The price was in line with the build theme. I had to pull every trick in the book to match the US regular retail price. Sheesh...

I'm sure my reference MSI RX 5700 XT won't be able to hit the better AIBs' performance but I will try my best by introducing some washers, tightening the screws on the GPU bracket, using a reasonable fan curve and undervolting. I don't think I'm missing any other tricks?

I'm sure my reference MSI RX 5700 XT won't be able to hit the better AIBs' performance but I will try my best by introducing some washers, tightening the screws on the GPU bracket, using a reasonable fan curve and undervolting. I don't think I'm missing any other tricks?

No , you pretty much nailed it on what you’ll have to do to get the best out of that card...When it comes, with a little trial and error, you can surely get it running adequately for your needs..

Plus you can always strap an accelero on it or something on a later date,or watercool the whole thing !

Yeah, I don't see why not, I have everything for a custom loop. Once I get bored with the air setup, all I have to do is buy the waterblock. Heck, I hear that the RX 5700 XT is similar in design to the R9 290. I may even throw the R9 290 waterblock on (making sure I'm not crushing anything) for giggles.

R9 290 bare PCB:

RX 5700 XT bare PCB:

Ok, maybe not but looks very close and I could probably offset the spacing of the VRAMs and VRMs with the strategic placement of the thermal pads. If not, well by that point the GPU waterblock might come down to around $100 CAD.
