[early build] NORTHERN ICE-X - Intel 10980XE [v0.01]

Well, since it's been about 9 years since my last build post/guide on here - which was an early edition i7-920 OC'd to 4Ghz entirely on air... I've decided it's finally time for a new build!

...

This is a very early stage, but I'll be updating this post with more content shortly.

New build, using a couple recycled components I had already (psu, fans), with new mobo/cpu/ram/liquid cooler/ssd/case.

I am going from a full-tower ATX (HAF932), to a mid-tower CM Masterbox 5 Lite RGB... should be interesting and poses a few challenges for airflow just from the case itself.

Turns out the price of this case comes with some trade-offs - which I am going to try to minimize the downside with some air improvement mods combined with AIO liquid cooling.

Mods Currently in Progress (details coming soon):
-------------------------------------------------------
- Additional intake breathing-room from front-lower cover/housing. Removed part of the 'black plastic' area - already covered by the dust-filter.

- New 280mm Radiator/fan top-mounted above the mobo. Custom install.

- Change out all the case fans (x4) from stock, and the radiator fans (x2) from stock... Target large improvements to static pressures and cfm's where appropriate... Less concerns about noise.

- Re-position x3 front air-intake fans to 'inside' the case, instead of inside the front cover/housing... Still in the same 'intake' orientation.

System components:
------------------
-Coolermaster Masterbox 5 Lite RGB
-Intel X-Series 10980XE
-MSI X299 Pro
-32Gb Trident DDR4-3600 RAM
-MSI RTX 2060 Gaming Z
-Corsair 110X 280mm Radiator - mod w/ x2 new 140mm Noctua Fans - x2 leftover Corsair fans relocated to front of case as intakes.
-Corsair 1000W PSU
-Seagate Firecuda 520 1TB drive
-Win10 Pro 64-bit
-...x4 new case fans....
-...x1 Corsair RAM aircooler
-Scythe Ultra 3000 Case Fan as exhaust (rear/upper).

Still waiting on some parts, so I will provide more of an update as I receive and start putting this all together.

Being Canadian myself and having contended lots w/ of Northern ice over the years, I'm looking forward to your build log. Personally, I think you can never have enough CPU (and for that matter GPU) cooling !

Cheers from the great white north! [Short status update]

The parts ordered are slowly trickling in.. will post some pics once I have everything in one place. CPU was/is back-ordered across the board, but I should hopefully be in line for restocks soon enough (fingers crossed).

Right now, the case looks pretty bare/stripped down right now with all the fans etc.. removed... looking forward to showing off my dremel work on the front-lower grille though! It was a good warm-up for the eventual chopping into the top of the case - to install the rad/fans (coming soon).

I didn't like the idea of using the existing front-mounts on the CM Masterbox 5 Lite - to mount the rad/fans - given that some people were struggling with this case for cooling/airflow issues with just fans in the front spot - let alone rads.

Decided to relocate the rad/fans to the ceiling of the case instead of the front - ordered a fan/grille that should help to mount everything - or at minimum, be a perfect template for the imminent hack job. Now the front of the case will be strictly for fresh-air 'intake' to feed the other fans at the top (rad) & back (case fan) all pointed in exhaust mode. Going to orient the PSU with the top intake fan facing down as well -- exhausting out the back of the case. This should help keep the fresh air up top going to the right places.

Also, considering using this older Corsair RAM Air Cooler... has two small fans and would add extra cooling to at least one of the RAM-banks (and surrounding chips..)... Once I fit up the mobo in the case with everything I will wait and see if this puppy will fit, as I figure it wouldn't hurt!

As mentioned, my last build posted on this site was over 8 years ago, and that cpu worked great.. in fact still is, but need more proc. horsepower now for newer titles, etc.

The last build was an i7-920 2.6Ghz cranked to 4.0Ghz on AIR only. That was a fun build at the time and I learned a lot - it was particularly finicky to OC that chip, but the whole system worked great once dialed it.

Although I considered the AMD chips for my new build, I decided to stick with the Intels for legacy purposes if nothing more - although I have high hopes for this 10980XE proc.

Having said that - the mobo should be interesting as well to see how well this fairly-reasonably priced X299 Pro board from MSI can perform.

As with any previous builds, I intend to push the limits of the cooling/case by trying to stack some of the odds - eg. fans for the rad optimized, logical 'flow' of the overall case air management (fresh in the front/bottom.. hot out the top/back.)

I have seen many case designs that the airflow made me scratch my head.. basically a cluster of conflicting directions/fans inside the case. Just want to mod this case proper and keep it straightforward.

If your old PSU is a Corsair HX1000 you should not be re-using it since its old not that good anymore and they are very unreliable when they get old

That's probably good advice... I think I am going to give it a go, and then add a new PSU to the list of short-term upgrades...

The Seasonic Prime Ultra would be a good replacement
You dont need 1000 watts by the way with the parts you have a 750 watt is more than enough power even for a bigger GPU
