Added bonus, these ended up being SATA drives instead of SAS, so they CAN be repurposed later on in a desktop if I choose to do so.

I wanted double everything (at minimum) of what I have now. So 16 cores / threads minimum (went with 32 + HT), 64GB RAM minimum (settled on 16 for now to get it going), and I needed at minimum 32TB of formatted and usable HDD space (ended up with approximately 42TB).

I figure when its time to add onto any of this later on (CPU, RAM, more storage), the price of things will be stupid cheap. I'm talking a few years minimum down the road.

My last server lasted 8 years on original hardware (only reason its on the FX is because I gave away the old Xeon setup). I figure this setup should last twice as long or longer.
Gotcha. Until recently, the sweet spot for price/capacity in Japan were 12TB Toshiba drives; which were still quite a bit more than you've quoted for US prices. I'm kind of jealous of 14TB drives @ $220...

So kind of an update ish.

Got an email back from B&H Photo yesterday stating that my PSU's aren't expected to even arrive in their warehouse until August 15th, so I'll get my PSU's 7-10 business days after that point. Ugh!!!! It's frustrating because when I bought it said they'd be in stock by July 14th. Also, everything else has arrived except the 8pin EPS adapters. So literally just waiting on the PSU's to be able to start building and at least firing them up with one CPU each so I can test the drives.

No option to get them elsewhere? When a shop does that, I usually cancel and order from somewhere else, even if it is a little more expensive.

I dunno. Everywhere I've been searching its a hard find. I was shooting for 750w ATX PSU's under $100 ish. I'm not too overly stressed. Got them both fired up today with a spare CX600w I had laying around (one at a time). Update incoming with some pictures.

First fire up Update!

So, I got a little bit impatient and decided to start firing these up and playing with them while I was waiting for the rest of the parts. Turns out, I ordered the wrong SAS cards. Perc H710's cannot run in non RAID mode, and I think that's what I need for FreeNAS. So, returning those and ordering some Perc H310's instead perhaps.

Otherwise, so far so good. Have both boards running with the latest BIOS. I was able to make sure all 4 CPU's are working. And I must say, it was REALLY wild seeing 32 cores / 64 threads in task manager! Gonna tinker with them for a while as they are, I'm looking to try to get the 14TB drives tested before I start writing to them. That way, I can at least start the NAS part and work on retiring my old server.
