Pio's New Home Server (Build Log)

Welcome all, this is where I'm going to post my build log at for my new (to me) home server.

So why a home server, some of you may be asking? Why not build a Ryzen rig and use it for everything? I've heard it all in the past. The reasoning is very simple....to keep upgrading as easy as possible, and as inexpensive as possible in the long run.

Now, this won't be my first time venturing into a server type build, however this will be my very first ever rack build from scratch. So this could get interesting. My prior server (NAStradamous), was built off LGA 1155 with a z68 board and a Xeon 1245. It originally had 32GB RAM in it, and 8x 3TB Toshiba hard drives in a RAID 50, running Windows. That unfortunately, was my mistake. Because it was a hardware RAID, and partitioned with Windows, there was no way for me to upgrade it later on. There was also no way for me to add more storage later on, without adding in another RAID card, and finding a way to house more drives, and the partitions would be seperated....it'd just be a mess trying to upgrade it.

Hence my idea for a rack!

Meet NAStradamous! It's now been nicknamed "Servrawr" on the network, because its no longer the original NAStradamous build (outlined above). However since the case was the same, and the hard drives and partitioning were the same, I figured it was worth mentioning.

The original NAStradamous was decommissioned in June of 2019 due to a divorce and move I overtook. The original NAStradamous build was donated to DesertRat here at OCN during that time period. He needed the Xeon and the RAM, figured he could go ahead and take the z68 board with it too and the PSU. This left me with just the chassis and drives left. Well, I had moved into a new apartment in December, made a new life for myself and I needed my server back up and running again......but the parts were already donated. So I was able to score a full FX 8 core build for $30 from local Facebook Marketplace, to make it work again!

Specs:
  • Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 Motherboard
  • AMD FX 8320 @ stock
  • CoolerMaster 212+
  • NZXT Source 210 Chassis (from original build)
  • 16GB (4x4GB) GSkill Ripjaws DDR3-1600
  • 650w XFX Ts PSU
  • 240GB Sandisk SSD
  • 7x 3TB hard drives, RAID 6 this time I think? (one drive failed)
  • OEM Nvidia GT310 (pictured is RX550 4GB, not in use currently)

Parts still to order:
  • Cables

I think that's all the parts that I'll be needing, after the stuff I've already ordered arrives. Not entirely sure yet, again....first ever rack build from scratch. Hopefully I'm not missing anything.

I need a poll or something to decide the name lol. Rig names I've used so far are "Burny" (and updates), "DisposalArea" (and updates), and "NAStradamous". I try to pick names that suite the build mostly, but I try to have some humor in them. I'm sure you can guess where their names came from previously..... NAStradamous was the only one that was on server duties of course out of my 3 favorite rig names to date.

First 3 posts are fully updated as far as I can for now. Parts have already started arriving, however I have not gotten the packages myself yet. They're being delivered to my family's home instead, as I live in an apartment and have already had issues with packages growing legs. I'll be doing some unboxing tomorrow following surgery. So I may or may not post the updates for a few days....but I will take plenty of pictures. Just may not get them uploaded immediately tomorrow.

I still have my BNIB Gigabyte NF4 SLI board laying around here somewhere, still wrapped up in original packaging.

I do miss my Opteron 165 though. Last I heard, my old Opteron is sitting in a HTPC running severely undervolted and overclocked (as I had it), with 8GB RAM now, somewhere up North in Canada. Somehow I cycled back through and ended back up with my old Corsair XMS 1GB DDR400 sticks, which I think I also donated to DesertRat. I have no clue what happened to my really good boards I used to have back in the day though.

I did a LOT with 939, and a LOT with G92. Played quite a bit with HD7900 series too. Yeah, its definitely about time I start playing with some computer parts again.

So, some of the parts have arrived already. Very impressed so far. I can't actually make anything run yet, so nothing really to "show" yet.

Everything ordered thus far has arrived except the 20 hotswap bay chassis and the CPU's. Those are still in transit. Since I'm still missing RAM, PSU's, and a few other bits and pieces, no reason to start assembling just yet. I'll be ordering those as soon as funds become available, which hopefully should be early next week.

These dual socket motherboards though....just wow. Most expensive motherboards I've ever had to date. Just one is worth the cost of my whole main rig!

Ah, the joys of server-grade kit. I had great fun 4-8 years ago with building and running quad-socket AMD boards (G34). The RAM was the single most expensive part of the whole thing, the boards? They sure weren't cheap, but were less than some of the TRX40 boards available now...

939 was probably the time i tinkered the most, by am2 and lga775, i did still but not as much. current lga2011 did a bit but im pretty much running stock again...

if anything, my NAS may sound more powerful than my main
