40% IPC from AMD slide could mean ~20% in real world. AMD often use best case scenario or cherrypicked benchmarks to show off the strength of their CPU

.........

I want to laugh, but it's such a horrible joke my sense of dignity won't allow it.

Whoever set up the conference platform is a sick bastard. Puns like that are never the product of a normal, functional mind.

Guess that counts as an announcement, right? Or at least subconscious messages. biggrin.gif

The indian guy just asked about whether 40% will be enough
"will be enough for what we think to be competitive"

In order to do that it needs to clocked around 20% higher than it´s rivals from Intel and thats pretty damn unlikely.

Significantly more cores with reasonable IPC and at significantly lower price is the only way to succeed.

Haven't read the entire thread, but is the 40% IPC improvement indeed based upon using Excavator/Carrizo as the reference point? If so, I do believe that Zen will be neck and neck with Haswell, which could be acceptable; depends on what Skylake actually delivers in reality. Even if Zen is right there with Haswell, agree 100% that it seems AMD will have to count on the value/more cores card once more to steal sales away from Intel. Looks to be a rerun of the PII vs. Penryn days.

Honest to goodness, the amount you'd save by moving to AMD here would practically be the difference in the cost it takes to cool the house over the summer. It is that serious of a problem here.

Was kinda hoping the 390X would've had better PPW improvements considering I always like to try both sides of the fence before making my final decision (AMD or Nvidia) every generation of cards I upgrade to.
I'm a lifelong resident with three AMD machines, four 290s, and an intel running 24/7 and my house isn't some sweltering jungle; maybe you have another issue?

Yeah, sounds like he needs to swap out the AC units and get some foam sprayed in the attic/walls, honestly. Even a moderately insulated house is easy to keep cool unless it's made out of glass or something.

Something to consider, Darkreap. The average foam installation saves about as much as it costs in the first year if your house is the problem.

Well keeping the heat out isn't going to work when there is a heatsource inside. Pumping that via a heat exchanger to the outside again is hard.
