That doesn't work like that. You made a claim,i asked burden of proof.

Back up your claim.

You're also wrong,it does not only happen in selected scenarios such as 4K gaming but also 1080p.

maybe this :

Energy consumption(including Heat) = Power consumption(P) x time(t)

since 240W choke only happens in a very short of time ( maybe one or few microsecond (10^-6 second) or maybe less ), Energy consumption (including heat) is much much much lower compare to an average 79w P x 3600 x 5h of gaming

The blame for this "Issue" (Non issue) is being directed to the 8gbps 8GB VRAM Modules which as many tests suggest are wired to take power from the PCIe x16 slot. The 4GB version not only have half the VRAM power consumption of the power hungry GDDR5 modules, but also runs 1Gbps lower, we could go into how much power each module use and how much that is decreased in half by using half the modules plus lowering the speed to 7Gbps on the 4GB version instead of 8Gbps on the 8GB version.

There are no 4GB reviews as of now, but from 79W you're looking at a way lower average on the 4GB 480, I'd say around 60W to 70W.

Because controversy, that's why.

The RX 480 is built in such a way that takes as much power there is available, raising the power limit to 50% will make the card actually consume 50% more power. Many have tried overclocking and have found no change in performance, like OC3D, until they raise the power limit bottleneck which makes the card use way more power than it should but actually increasing performance.

Take 6x R9 290xs each pulling 66W from the 12v rail and around 9W from the 3.3v rail of their respective motherboard PCIe slot. Do the math...

That is 450W being pulled from the motherboard (I ran that on several machines during the bitcoin heyday and many other users run similar configurations on cheap motherboards).

Lets do the math.. 3x 80W = 240W.

So let me ask you all... how come many bitcoin miners can run 6 R9 290xs on the same motherboard using PCIe ribbon cables pulling 450W without a single issue yet 3 RX 480s are somehow responsible for burning out a motherboard after pulling 240W?

What is a larger number. 240 or 450???

The only thing I am happy about all this is that if there is a problem its not chip desing flaw and it more about the pcb and how amd decided to make it. And theres several ways to fix it be it by driver or by hardware.
