I have only seen one properly documented case of a PCIE slot dying with a 480 in it. Wasn't the test hardware of Tomsharware(?) that measures the PCIE power draw proven faulty?

Other than that its just faceless people on reddit and tech forums claiming that this is happening with no hard evidence. How do we even know the boards are dead....

I just feel like immature, underage fanboys will look for reasons to hate on an AMD launch because they have nothing better to do. Get enough people on the band wagon and it will require a response.

There's no doubt it's a concern, which is why AMD has responded quickly with a fix, whether or not it's been blown out of proportion or not is another matter.

In the end it won't matter if the fix works correctly.

how did this card ever make it through to retail ?

I really don't know. This is bad news. The RX 480 will forever be limited due to it's poor power design which could have been fully avoided with some basic hardware changes to the PCB components.

Intel Core i9 9900K HT 5GHz
GIGABYTE Z390 Ultra
AMD ASUS STRIX OC VEGA 64
G-Skill Trident 2x8GB DDR4 4000MHz
Samsung EVO NVM.e 250GB
SeaSonic 1250W Gold
Corsair 900D + Custom Loop.

The new driver will be adjusting the power distribution so they aren't out of spec on the PCIE slot power draw. More power will be drawn from the 6-pin connector, which is fine because it can handle more power.

The current card is not harming anything, but this will satisfy the media and the card will get a slight performance boost as well.

Although I decided not to involve myself in buying anything from AMD or NVIDIA until they come to their senses when it comes to price gauging, I think AMD just maimed themselves once more for this gen.

Not to say that it is or isn't a concern, but it should be pointed out that just because AMD is doing something to address the alleged issues doesn't mean there is actually a problem. Perception by the masses, even if unfounded, can easily lead to a response from the company.

its funny how people on this site hate when someone post defending AMD, meanwhile people hating on AMD get a free pass to keep posting same hating post towards amd.

But I agree this is blown way out of spec. (see what I did there smile.gif) with the adaption rate increasing for win10 it's easily assumed that many aren't using eol mb's like the lga775. So IMO this is a storm in a tea cup situation.
Imagine a kid that saved on his school lunches to buy an RX480. He plugs it into his Core 2 Quad Inspiron that his parents got him from Craigslist and blews it. I doubt he would buy AMD again wink.gif
