[DT] Microsoft is reportedly planning an Xbox One without a disc drive for 2019

Quote:
According to Thurrott, the disc-free Xbox One system will cost around $200, down significantly from the standard price of current models. The console will apparently launch alongside a “disc-to-digital” program that gives players the option of turning in their old disc-based games for download codes.
Would be interesting to see how low they can get the price of an Xbox1x.

Edit:

The goal of this would be to reduce cost, therefore it's safe to assume Microsoft would go for a much smaller form factor.

Microsoft has to license Blu-ray from Sony. It adds to the cost, not only in licensing fee's but also it makes for a larger console. It's safe to assume that going forward, should Microsoft ditch the disc drive, they will be aiming at a more Roku/amazon fire stick/apple TV market.

I think talk of an apple TV competitor/killer with an xbox built in is the best way to think of this device.

until they trade old console for new one and a refund check, its kinda a useless concept, nobody will buy a new one if they already have the old one and a pile of games

Unless they can guarantee all games purchased will be backwards compatible on future consoles and they'll never shut down those servers, I don't want it to be a success because at that point you're paying $60+ to rent games. Unfortunatly, if that does happen, I do see it being successful anyway.

I used to say the same thing about music/movies/etc, we all used to say the same thing; back in the day right here on these forums laughing at people who thought "renting" content was a good idea. Now I still have the same line of thought, I still get my media in physical copies based on that philosophy yet it seems nobody else really does and everyone else is okay with renting content.

Give it enough time, no matter how bad an idea it is, eventually enough people get on board and it becomes a good idea.

The game companies and publishing companies all want digital only, all sales final, they control your content. If they get rid of the used game market then all sales go through them, which means they get a cut of it every time now matter how many years have passed. EA was the first one to start this trend with codes in the game box to unlock things like multiplayer access. Only the first owner gets the full game and then people who bought used had to pay an extra $20 for a new code. This made it so the used game market still gave EA their cut, making double charges off a single game.

I also refuse to rent content. No physical copy though, unless you consider a HDD "physical storage" lol
I will subscribe to a VPN service but that makes sense.

who cares, it's just Microsoft games.

correct me if im wrong but none of the original XBOX games ever went on to become a collector's item.

if people can save 33% on a console, most would go digital in a heartbeat

this day was coming and everyone saw it...surprised it took this long

first it was the floppy drive, then the 3.5mm jack, now consoles are ditching disc drives when most PCs already ditched them 10 years ago

streaming/digital content is the way forward. It's why Blockbuster died and games at retail stores keep shrinking

In before people say their ISP sucks or that Blu-ray is best bro. I agree with the latter but it's hardly worth the hassle for me now.

The difference between iTunes/Steam and Microsoft, is Microsoft have shut down their game downloading services twice over the last 10 years (GFWL and Xbox Live for the 360) rendering games you've bought through them useless since if you didn't download them before the services were shut down, those games you paid for are gone forever. Until Microsoft can prove they're not going to do this again, this console is going to be useless.

Microsoft also needs to fix their pricing. They're charging £5/month for Xbox Live and they're charging £60 for new digital AAA games. There is literally no reason for this when new AAA games on Steam as well as physical copies (for consoles) are £50.

The original Forza and Halo games. I'm sure there are more, but those are the ones I can think of right now.
