When you think about it, the mid-90s was the pong-level era of 3-D graphics.

I distinctly remember the first time I used accelerated 3-D graphics. I forget the game... it might have a MS flight sim; but I installed my graphics card and didn't notice any improvement in quality. Then I went into the options and flipped the renderer switch from software to Glide or directx... and my life changed forever...

My first 3D card was a Sierra Screamin' 3D, with the original Tomb Raider being the first game I played that made use of it. Prior to that I had a SVGA card, don't know what the brand was, it came with my Pentium I system...and before that I had an EGA card (16 colors) in my 8088 system.

The s3 virge was my first d-gpu. Descent 2 was the first game to truly make use of it. Like @umeng2002 , I flipped the switch and holy heck, i couldnt believe my eye balls. I believe support was only for the s3 virge line, many of my friends had the game but not the s3 virge, the jealousy was real

After taking a few years off gaming etc due to university my next card was the Ati 9500 which i in turn flashed the 9700 bios onto, that thing was a beast.

Yeah, I think the first game was actually MS Flight Sim 98 and Rogue Squadron and Falcon 4.0.

Obviously, I had used computers for years prior (as a small kid), but those were the first time seeing accelerated 3-D graphics.

Damn I just remembered how fun those Rogue Squadron games were.

There are a few dozen glass cases in the lobby of AMD's HQ in Markham ontario, they have all sorts of interesting prototypes (AMD camera) as well as retail boxes (ATI 9800, AMD 295x2, etc), some older ATi asics, awards and such (20+ years old)... super cool to see.

I rocked my ATi 8500 64MB card until the HD 4830. I picked up the 1600XT and the 2600XT but both gave me a ton of issues with drivers.

Still have the three cards, need to get an AGP board to test them though.

I keep an active AGP rig to this day (opteron 180 @ 2.7ghz, 2gb ddr400 on a gigabyte s939 board). Most powerful card I've got for it is a Gecube x1950pro 256mb, though. Followed by a x800pro, then 6600gt, and down the line from there.

First gpu I really used for gaming was a Ati Rage 128, Voodoo 3 and then a bit later my GF4 ti4200 128mb.
