[AnandTech] AMD: "No Chiplet APU Variant on Matisse, CPU TDP Range same as Ryzen-2000”

https://www.anandtech.com/show/13852...e-as-ryzen2000

Quote:
AMD stated that, at this time, there will be no version of the current Matisse chiplet layout where one of those chiplets will be graphics. We were told that there will be Zen 2 processors with integrated graphics, presumably coming out much later after the desktop processors, but built in a different design. Ultimately APUs are both mobile first as well as lower cost parts (usually), so different design decisions will have to be made in order to support that market.

Sounds similar to the first gen Ryzen where the APU's were delayed and released as a gen 1.5 type deal.

Darn. I was thinking of upgrading my aunt's Ryzen 2400G and using her old CPU for a Plex server. Guess we'll just have to wait patiently.

I wonder if that means.. Navi is using a multi-chiplet design like Ryzen.

AMD has yet to release a 12nm desktop APU. So maybe we will see a 3200G or 3400G before we get 7nm APU's.

Well, it definitely means we'll see 16/32 mainstream, so that discussion can be put to rest.

There is no point to Zen 2 APU for AM4. Faster GPU with same memory?

Maybe that is why they are using a different non-chiplet design for it. Perhaps adding an HBM stack?

Even DDR5 on AM5 will be a bit slow for an GPU. I think moving to HBM would be a better option at some point.

They wouldn't dare compete with Intel's APUs, they would gain too much market share from business customers. Some decisions from AMD when it comes to their products make no sense to customers, they have the tech but don't use it, squandered opportunities. They will rather make such products for competition haha.

Ultimately a 4th player in the CPU and GPU oligopoly would be great for everyone. Unlikely to happen on desktop for regular people though. On servers... already happening.
