[PCGAMER] Sapphire says GPU mining is making a comeback, outs a 16GB Radeon RX 570

Quote:
"Sapphire will have access to a Grin miner that will port the CUDA miner. Factor in the affordable cost of the Sapphire 16GB RX 570 itself, which is a third of the price of competing 16GB cards designed for professional applications, and Sapphire seems to have produced a veritable money printing machine," Thompson claims.

...and I thought cryptomining was dying...

It's not dying, its dead.

Although I am fully expecting some kind of zombie apocalypse where mining comes back and its hungry for people's retirement. Savings... *SAVINGSSSSS!!!!!*

Crypo isn't dead just like the stock market isn't dead.

I wonder what crypto's need 16 gb vram though, seems excessive.

Anything more than 6GB on that card is overkill. It competes with GTX 1060 3GB basically.

It is pretty specific to grincoin, as mentioned in the article. It uses a PoW cycle called "cuckoo" and it is really memory heavy, most of the people mining it recommend at least 8gb of vram. Apparently cuckoo has 2 modes you can run, one is asic resistant and only mineable with GPU's/CPU's, and then the other is Asic friendly. I believe this is what the guy from Sapphire was referencing in that you can mine both at the same time due to the card having enough vram to do both. Though; you would probably not make anything with the Asic friendly mode so it's pretty useless.

the highest mem requirement i'm aware of is MTP which is the algo for zcoin, it needs 8gb.

In the article it did mention something about dual mining an asic algo which runs alongside the gpu algo for the same coin. I'm guessing this is why it needs the extra vram. However, its completely pointless to gpu mine an asic algo, that might increase profit .5% which will more than get offset with higher power consumption.

When I was involved in cryptomining the cards I chose didn't have the most memory or even the greatest efficiency, it was the balance of overall performance and consistent uptime that netted the most gains. I personally would not have sought out a card with higher memory unless it was going unnoticed by my competition, like the Tahiti LE card was at the time.

Or someone talked with Sapphire, and they bought a whole ton of this 16GB cards, which are probably made specially for them. Then Sapphire probably thought, why not make some more and see how well they will sell.
