How many people are having this problem so far? The article said 2000 had signed thus far, so even if Apple has only sold 2 million MacBook Pros in 2016/2017 (I think they actually sell ~3-4m per quarter) then that's 0.001% of the laptops they've sold have developed this issue. Obviously, not everyone that has had this issue has signed the petition, but tis' a small number thus far. If we look at the actual number of units sold during 2016/17, and even take into account 2018... then that percentage is going to get even smaller.

Maybe... Or maybe they want a laptop running OS X? Either way, if they're happy with their purchase then good for them. If it doesn't do the job, they probably won't buy one again.

Yet this also applies to most tech companies as well to varying degrees. For some reason there're people out there that only think it's important when it's Apple doing it.
Specifically regarding cost... Apple product do generally carry a premium, however it's not as much as you imply in an Apples to Apples comparison. They do gouge the hell out of you for the "upgrades" though... I'm pretty sure you'll be paying more than 2x to upgrade from 8GB of RAM to 16GB.
