The idea is to take people not to build something great, its to slow down Nvidia/AMD.

lol wut, they couldn't do it with their IGP, they obviously wouldn't be able to with discrete even if they take people from Nvidia.

its not really about building great really, take Polaris for example, just about the right performance at the right price.
but do you really think Intel would be able to build something as good as Polaris? at a much lower price at that?

it would make more sense for Intel to just abandon the graphics segment and focus on making accelerator cards like their Xeon Phi.

I would have said yes before the 10nm issues. AMD + Nvidia have 20K people. Intel had 107K. They are huge.

yes they have many people, but what about it? did their 107K people manage to help them keep AMD's Zen chips from eating into their sales?

if they really wanted to slow down the GPU market growth, the accelerator cards are a better bet.

Well you can see how hard its AMD to break into the Server Market where arguably Epyc is even better there.

but that doesn't explain why Intel's 107K people couldn't keep AMD's <20K people's effort from eating into their sales.
and to top it off, AMD didn't even have as much funds as Intel does.

And how many are available to dynamically retask to discrete GPU?

NVidia owns the field because its a software field. I think Intel is more like AMD, a hardware company. Think about how many profiles both AMD and NVidia created in their drivers for games. How would Intel battle that... NVidia and AMD spend their sweet time creating new drivers with few new profiles each time, depending on the game release dates and schedules. Intel just wouldn't be able to fully support older games like AMD and NVidia would. I think they could win if they were to start slow and over the years they could develop drivers to support that majority of games being played. Then again, maybe they will dedicated years and release their discrete GPU with a huge list of supported games.

from what i heard they're decommissioning their entire Xeon Phi lineup, they could use that team to make discrete GPUs.
i suppose thats another reason why they stopped the Xeon Phi lineup too, switching over to discrete GPUs...

Well if we look at TSMC which has 47K +, Intel probably had a lot in fab business too. I do not think people are the problem for Intel. They for the money. They have to hit hard. If they fail it will end up bad just like in the past. Retask to dGPU? Very low. Maybe 1K at most. Probably only higher PM jobs.
