the proprietor of Mayhem Solutions Ltd, better known simply as Mayhems, shared information regarding Thermaltake introducing their own Pastel-branded coolants to be used in the PC DIY water cooling sector. Mayhems has had a trademark registered for this in the UK since 2015, and let Thermaltake know via email to try to reach an amenable solution
...
After word from Thermaltake's legal team, first trying to defend the use of Pastel as a generic term, and then saying that they would work on a compromise, Mayhems told us they have not heard back from the company in over a week since the last correspondence, and are forced to take legal action to prevent Thermaltake P1000 pastel coolants to be sold in the UK
Have i ever mentioned my deep, deep love and affection for Thermalfake?
Ask me about them. Let me tell you.

By the way, Caselabs former employees contacted TechPowerUp after reading the article. Follows the excerpt where they remind us why i love Thermalfake so much:
"Some such instances include using a foreign PR firm to pretend to get information on the company which would then be provided to the legal department of Thermaltake, using social media posts as proof of libel, and also pretending to be customers and enticing a false sense of security to get the company to speak bad about Thermaltake"

Read it here: https://www.techpowerup.com/252352/t...mark-in-the-uk

(you all know how little love i have for coloured fluids and pretty bubbles. But i respect a man's work and i hate thieves. I wholeheartedly wish Mayhems the best in this, though i fear they don't know what they've gotten themselves into; not just yet anyway)

@Mayhem will you please keep us informed? To whatever extent is possible of course.

Pride, honour and purity.

They could call it opaque liquid if they want something generic

I've pantented all the colors, now pay!

What a stupid patent office allows such ridiculous patents?

Also breathing has been patented! You are all in violation of a patent.

The whole patent thing should be abolished ASAP. It's nothing more than trolling and paying lawyers. Best of all it hurts customers the most.

Patenting the term pastel for coloring is beyond petty. Go right ahead TT imo.

I agree with not liking the trademarking of common works but if Mayhems hadn't done it then a another company would have and it would have left Mayhems defending . Alphacool/Aquatuning/Phobya did exactly that in 2009 and screwed over a bunch of watercooling companies https://www.techpowerup.com/96567/ge...ts-competitors

Can they not establish antecedence to immunize a company from such a situation, per your description, based solely on official documents and product launches, without having to resort to trademarking "pastel"? Judicially, I mean.

That is, assuming Mayhems' motivations are as benevolent as they simply wanting to ward off future legal matters.

I've heard that is a fairly expensive defense. I'm also not sure how that works for the UK/internationally so trademarking everything you can is probably just the safer bet with the current systems.

Regardless Mayhems wasn't exactly goldmining with their trademark.
Quote:
Mayhems told us that the last offer they sent to Thermaltake was with the intention to put this in the past. They wanted Thermaltake to make a £100 donation to a charity in exchange for permission to use the registered trademark.
I'm going to bet that offer never got past TT's lawyers.

If I was to assume that that quote was true, TT is doing this just to generate PR. Any marketing is good marketing and TT is just trying to convey that they're producing something for the market at more palpable prices or more variants at similar price.

As an aside, if it was my product, I wouldn't have stepped down from my initial request.

#2 their debt is insane, even for a "diverse field" company. They cannot even afford to service the debt maintenance let alone make an actual dent in the debt itself. - Internet Stranger

I have a hard time believe that. I mean, if all TT has to do to use Mayhems' trademarked nomenclature is pay a very small sum to a 3rd party, why is this even a thing for discussion?
