Or you can use that eGPU for research.
Your only block will be the CPU, and many laptop CPUs can be good enough for gaming even on 4K in some games.
And of course super fast storage, full laptop power, etc, that comes and available from TB3.

Regarding latency, for eGPU, it's negligible. I am currently testing RTX 2080 in eGPU, and its fantastic. As as long as it comes either though high quality chip or straight to the CPU, you do not feel the latency.
ah ok, right...I did not think about it.... well, I would prefer gaming on the laptop monitor just for portability ( I would use it for lan party, moving a 23'' monitor, a matx case, mouse and keyboard and other gingles can be frustrating sometimes) but for someone can be good having a semi-complete gaming setup relying on a laptop as the main rig

TB is also useful for ITX systems as you can add a 10GBe adaptor using it that otherwise wouldn't be possible due to board size restraints etc.

So this is what they were holding out for.

Really everything after USB 3.0 should have just been named by its bandwidth, or a logical progression of 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, etc.

Hopefull we get a solid 10 years with no changes to USB 4, and then just give us USB 5.

you guys sound like desktop users who hasn't shopped for a mobile/portable device in 5 years

the $999 Surface clone I got from Dell even back in 2015 (so probably worth $400 now) had two 40Gbps TB3 ports

Reminds me of copying videos via Firewire 1394.
Speaking of Apple, the current transfer speed of Lightning cable is still painfully slow.

Because they are still using USB 2 just like the 90% of other android OEMs that didn't bother put USB 3 into their devices.
