[arstechnica] Thunderbolt 3 becomes USB4, as Intel’s interconnect goes royalty-free

Quote:
Fulfilling its 2017 promise to make Thunderbolt 3 royalty-free, Intel has given the specification for its high-speed interconnect to the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), the industry group that develops the USB specification. The USB-IF has taken the spec and will use it to form the basis of USB4, the next iteration of USB following USB 3.2

Seems like it'll be USB-C and pretty much have the characteristics or Thunderbolt 3, or simply be Thunderbolt 3 with backwards compatibility for USB. So there's no point in waiting for one

From what I heard, USB4 laptops will basically connect directly to Thunderbolt 3 devices and should recognize them and work with them as if they were USB4 devices from the start. USB4 essentially copied the Thunderbolt 3 spec verbatim and since TB3 has provision for USB protocols, USB4/TB3 supersedes USB3.x in every way.

Alternatively, current TB3 enabled laptops like MacBook pro's will essentially will be compatible with USB4 devices.

surprised they didn't go with USB 3.1 Gen 3.1 or something else needlessly confusing

well, depends....

TB3 is only on expensive laptops that already have good internal gpus so it is a waste of money and time imho

Instead, USB4 will be more popular and so, more choice and cheaper prices......ah and even amd laptops will benefit from it

I wish hard drives and SSD's would switch to USB-C. So we can get rid of those obsolete SATA ports.

Not really.
If we leave apple out of it, there are numerous laptops that come with at least one USB-C that is thunderbolt, even ranging in the 600$ price tags.

Intel has been pushing it, and considering they support it natively, and so many utilities start to use it, manufacturers are following suit and add it to their system. It doesn't cost them anything, and if it attracts some extra customers, why not?

And considering more cheaper eGPU solutions comes out, it makes it easier to buy a laptop with decent CPU but crappy GPU, and still gain some benefits.
