A piece of hardware that is "no compromises" would be even more exciting though.
Yeah some of it is still pretty sci-fi but a self contained headset that offers a AAA vr experience isn't unreasonable in the foreseeable future. If the R&D is put into it. Still will suffer from not being convenient (from wearing it) but would be cool. I'd likely pull my rift out here and there if it didn't require hooking it up to a pc and the sensors.

The powerful standalone headset part is easy, it's getting vr without putting something on your face that would be seriously sci-fi.

Looks like its releasing next month at $500 with 2880x1600 combined eyes res and 135 deg FOV. Not sure if specs are good enough for me, i want 4K res or 180 degree FOV.

I'd rather have the reverbs much higher res and slightly lower FOV for an extra $100. Also because I was taking for granted oled was better in this application but that might not be true.

That is way too much of a baby step for me to bite. If they had released this in 2017 it would have been a good buy.

That info is speculation from over 5 months ago, nothing has been confirmed yet. But hope the specs are better than that.

Looks like Acer is hitting the market like HP with headset that has 2160×2160 per eye...

Hopefully Valve doesn't have something that will be outdated before it even hits the market.

If it really is display port 1.2 then there is a good chance that it will be.

Could still have high res panels, support DP 1.4 and still have backwards compatibility with DP 1.2 for older GPUs. Would just run at a lower refresh rate or render resolution when on DP 1.2.

Right, but if the headset only has display port 1.2 then it will always be limited to lower refresh rate and resolution. I'm not really sure what info about the headset is correct so the DP1.2 spec could easily be wrong.
