[AnandTech] AMD Launches 2nd Gen Ryzen Pro & Athlon Pro APUs

source: https://www.anandtech.com/show/14185...thlon-pro-apus

Quote:
The family of AMD’s 2nd generation Ryzen Pro Mobile processors includes four models: the Ryzen 7 Pro 3700U, the Ryzen 5 Pro 3500U, the Ryzen 3 Pro 3300U, and the Athlon Pro 300U. The Ryzen Pro-branded parts feature four cores with or without SMT, whereas the Athlon Pro device has two cores. All of the APUs have an integrated Radeon Vega GPU, yet with a different configuration. The new APUs feature a TDP of up to 15 W and are therefore aimed at ultra-portable laptops.

Interesting. Sounds like these are aimed at business environments, where there is a large market for a docked laptop powering a couple full size monitors.

sounds good. I like lower cost alternatives to the classic i5 work lappy. I'm pretty impressed with my current gen HP AMD touch screen & I returned my last AMD laptop in exchange for intel+ 970m.

i mean, I can dual box ff11 all day, while pushing 3x monitors = perfect ratio of work to play.

Been kinda out of the loop for a while. It seems like all I hear of these days is ultra-portables. Does anyone know if AMD's mentioned anything about mobile workstation CPUs?

That's exactly what these are used for, their competition are Intel's vPro mobile workstation chips.

Ah, gotcha. My impression used to be ultra-portable = lower performance, but I guess that doesn't have to be the case anymore.

It still is the case if you need something that approaches desktop levels of performance. The ultra portables have become a lot better than they used to be, but will still lag behind a full sized laptop with multi threaded sustained use situations (rendering etc..). The difference is widened if you need to factor in gpu performance.
