[Business Insider]Review units of Samsung's folding phone are breaking, and it's a potential fiasco that threatens the company's fragile reputation

Quote:
Multiple journalists are reporting that their review copies of Samsung's new folding phone have had catastrophic failures just a week before the official launch — a potential fiasco that threatens the company's fragile reputation.

On Wednesday, multiple tech reporters took to Twitter to raise concerns about the screen on the Galaxy Fold, a highly anticipated device that is scheduled to be the first major smartphone with a foldable screen when it goes on sale to consumers on April 26.

A video posted by CNBC tech editor Steve Kovachshowed the left-hand side of the screen on the outlet's review unit malfunctioning "after one day of use." Mark Gurman from Bloomberg also posted photos of the screen progressively detiorating to a state of total unusability, writing: "The screen on my Galaxy Fold review unit is completely broken and unusable just two days in."

Dieter Bohn at The Verge, meanwhile, reported that a mysterious bulge had appeared in his review unit's screen, and Marques Brownlee, a popular YouTube gadgets review, also reported having screen issues.

Funniest part is that pre orders are sold out.

This gonna be pretty close to the portable napalm claymore issue. Not that bad because it won't hurt anyone or set your house on fire but still...

I really hope this doesn't turn people off to folding phones. We need big name companies who are willing to take risks and further the research and development of innovative mobile tech like this. That sentiment aside, I can't help but feel embarrassed for samsung.

It's kind of ridiculous that this failure mode wasn't tested for before all the engineering that went into designing a phone around a folding screen. This is the kind of problem you find in a couple weeks if you're actually testing for it.

In all probability it was detected by someone but large companies are often incredibly stiff and rife with internal politics so even if a engineer where to report a fault there would be a tendency to plow ahead and hope for the best.

I didn't know Samsung had a fragile reputation. I thought it was bullet proof, their phones could kill you with fire and people were still lining up to buy them.

A folding brick, no thanks. Never liked folding or sliding phones/gadgets, always bulkier and more prone to break than simple flat rigid devices.

Sadly yes.

I bought the non-explosive S7 and the battery life went to hell after only 16 months. I swore up and down I'd never buy another Samdung product but two weeks later I ended up with a Note 9.

(in all fairness, I only bought the Note 9 for the 4000 mAh battery, and also because I got close to a 40% discount on it)
