[VPN Mentor] Report: Unknown Data Breach Exposes 80 Million US Households

I guess this is currently sitting out there, unprotected on some Microsoft cloud server. Unknown who or why.
Source: https://www.vpnmentor.com/blog/repor...homes-exposed/

They're looking for tips.

I thought we had some gov agency that investigated things like this.

Sounds like we aren't ever going to know whose database that was unless someone leaks it out.

I wonder if the 80 million people whose data may have been accessed will ever be notified?

Update 30/04/2019: This database is no longer open to the public. Following the publication of our report, Microsoft took its server offline. In a statement, they said, “We have notified the owner of the database and are taking appropriate steps to help the customer remove the data until it can be properly secured”. Microsoft has not revealed who owns the database.
So apparently someone at MS knows who the owner is, and the owner knows the data could have been compromised. I guess now we'll just have to wait and see if anyone comes forward to notify the exposed parties, or if someone at MS leaks the owner.

With the weird parameters contained in the database, I'm thinking it is probably AARP.

i wonder if those 80 million are largely second, third, copies, etc.

I got notified so many times in such a short period of time, after Home Depot & Target that I now have a free life time supply of credit monitoring, etc.

at this point, who's data hasn't gotten jacked? Just because we haven't been notified doesn't mean it hasn't happened. Hell, My BattleNet from the late 90s got hacked the other day... not even the new account I made for Diablo iii beta (last blizzard title I've touched).

i thought exactly the same, i've been getting their junk mail for ~decade, but AARP doesn't care if i owned a home. but i could be wrong, haven't opened one in years.

i sorta smell a reverse mortgage scam.

But, but I have nothing to hide, just my credit cards and banks accounts, health information, accounts to my dental, car and house insurance, accounts to all the local retail and online stores, accounts to my Steam, Epic... games etc... But who cares that companies who are suppose to safeguard these things are constantly getting hacked.

My computer can get hacked and there is nothing on there either like my surfing history and passwords to everything under the sun. The letter I wrote to grandma, the script I'm working on (they fired the Game of Thrones writers after the disaster that was s08-e03 and they hired me you know) and...

Oh, well I have nothing to hide. I go along with the flow of society, I act like a zombie and I have no political thought and I'm agnostic as they come. I believe in everything they tell me too, since I don't have a brain to research things for myself. A zombified society is right down cool with the authorities that be and they generally have no issues with someone like me. No, no I'm safe.

So who is hacking all the time, sure some hacker groups do it for sport, some do it for profit but the biggest hacker has to be who I wonder?

Those hypothetical loan approval and the mortgage refinance approval letters are the ones that bother me the most. I don't need the hassle of trying to prove I didn't take out a 15k home improvement loan from the type of seedy company that advertises for customers in a deceptive fashion.
Identity theft is what worries me.

Like a lot on here, I've been giving out answers to security questions since the age of dial up. They don't seem as safe as biometrics anymore. The sloppiness makes me think this had something to do with a gov agency like census. Maybe something voter registration. The TSA is collecting biometrics, so they could be flopped out too. But that would take more data space than is on a midrange smartphone.

At least Microsoft took it offline after it was noticed.
