[AnandTech] A USB Stick as an SSD? A New Silicon Motion SM3282 Single-Chip Controller for USB SSDs

Quote:
Silicon Motion has introduced its first single-chip controller for portable USB SSDs. The SM3282 promises to enable makers of portable drives to offer up to 400 MB/s sequential read speeds in a cost-efficient manner previously unachievable by external SSDs.

Silicon Motion’s SM3282 chip packs a USB 3.0 (aka USB 3.2 Gen 1) controller alongside an SSD controller featuring 2 NAND channels with 4 CE (Chip Enables) per channel, integrated 3.3V/2.5V/1.8V/1.2V voltage regulators, and other necessary things. The chip comes in a 68-pin QFN package and supports the latest types of 3D NAND memory (including 3D TLC and 3D QLC memory featuring up to 96 layers) from all leading suppliers of flash. It also supports both USB Type-A as well as USB Type-C connectors.

The Lexar P20 was an experiment in selling an SSD in a "normal" flash drive form factor. 400MB/s thorouput on a usb3 port. I used mine as an OS install drive and Windows 7 would install in seconds. Crazy fast and quite hot running.

That drive was discontinued as they would cook themselves and capacity was low for the price.

I wonder what sort of prices these will hit the market at. That seems to be the deciding factor in whether they sell well or not.

Interesting... I wonder how it differs from other options on the market. I have a Corsair GTX 1tb that gets around 400MB/s. My guess is lower cost. Especially with 96L.

I bought one of these: https://www.amazon.com/QNINE-Portabl...ateway&sr=8-24 adapters and a cheap 42mm ssd a couple of years back. It got hot when used as an os drive, but didn't see much use. Eventually I just pulled the ssd and it is sitting in a fanless gemini lake beelink living room Netflix/browser box.

Sometimes I think of getting another 42mm and sticking it in there as a mobile steam drive but have always decided to not waste the money.

Yeah, Iv been wanting to get one of the NVME versions. So i can pop an Optane ssd into it. Maybe one of the new M15's.
