[Samsung] AMD Co-Developing ULP GPU [RDNA] with Samsung.

AMD and Samsung Electronics today announced a multi-year strategic partnership in ultra low power, high performance mobile graphics IP based on AMD Radeon graphics technologies. As part of the partnership, Samsung will license AMD graphics IP and will focus on advanced graphics technologies and solutions that are critical for enhancing innovation across mobile applications, including smartphones.
Very interesting move. This would help both Samsung and AMD. Since the mobile focus is perf/watt AMD could leverage these learning in their other segments.

Samsung uses Snapdragons in the US, so this likely wont matter for most people as I bet it would only affect Exynos phones.
Though Samsung may use AMD tech in their TVs for image processing down the line, instead of continuing their own in house stuff.

This is pretty exciting! I, too, hope this will help AMD get closer to nV in terms of perf/watt in the desktop segment (not that I really care about efficiency, but it would be nice little cherry on the top if their future architectures perform well).

Doesn't sound like a collaborative effort as much as Samsung just buying the rights to use the RDNA architecture in their phones.

Samsung will be using AMD ip to develop their own GPU for their Exynos SoC. AMD isnt going to be involved on actual development.

As the others above have stated, AMD likely won't get anything out of this that they can leverage on their own GPUs. Unless AMD has the nerve to steal from Samsung. AMD vs Samsung, no contest in Samsung's favor.

Nope, not at all. AMD will just license the IP and if Samsung faces issue AMD will not get involved.

I wonder how Qualcomm feels about this. IMHO, although still good, Adreno is getting long in the tooth. I hope AMD doesn't sell this off as they did with ATI Imageon.

that is unfortunate. I was looking forward to some really low power AMD stuff. Good for AMD though (anything to get that $$).

Somebody is eating their wheaties early in the morning and reading IR emails

In other news, yehaw. ATi sold off its mobile IP to Qualcomm way back in order to raise funds. A needed move at the time. Qualcomm has done great things from it, but im excited to see how Samsung products benefit from Radeon GPU over the Mali found in their Exynos SOC processors. Hopefully the open-source drives for the future SOCs will be better... I have an https://www.hardkernel.com/ko/tag/odroid-xu/ with Mali GPU, but it was a PITA to get it running well under straight linux (instead of Android).
