[Guru3D.com] AMD Pre-X570 boards will not support 4.0 PCIe

Just got this off Guru3D.

Yes, that's what he said. Actually, AMD's Robert Hallock said that on Reddit. earlier on some motherboard manufacturers showed PCIe Gen 4.0 support in series 400 BIOSes.

And that confirms it plain and simple. The new 500 series chipset will support PCIe express Gen 4.0 in combination with Ryzern 3000 processors. Anything below, simply not. Whether or not you'll find PCIe 4.0 a buying feature is also topic of debate, your GPU certainly will not need that bandwidth, and while PCIe Gen 4.0 based NVMe SSD(s) are fun, would you truly really need 5000 MB/sec in SSD performance, other than for bragging rights of course .

"Hallock: This is an error we are correcting. Pre-X570 boards will not support PCIe Gen 4. There's no guarantee that older motherboards can reliably run the more stringent signaling requirements of Gen4, and we simply cannot have a mix of "yes, no, maybe" in the market for all the older motherboards. The potential for confusion is too high. When final BIOSes are released for 3rd Gen Ryzen (AGESA 1000+), Gen4 will not be an option anymore. We wish we could've enabled this backwards, but the risk is too great."

Not like many of us will care for one less feature running older x470 boards or earlier, but I seem to recall ASUS reps telling the reviewers that some boards will get it. But if AMD locks it out then that's that. Won't make me purchase CVIIIHero or CVIIIFormula, but it is a bit disappointing since ASUS seems to feel that their x470 boards could handle the process.

I am really starting to feel my Oats as a long time member of OCN. Why did we go back to this system again?

to steal a quote from a blast from the past:
MSI Calls Bluff on Gigabyte's PCIe Gen 3 Ready Claim
Quote:
MSI begins by explaining that PCIe support isn't as easy as laying a wire between the CPU and the slot. It needs specifications-compliant lane switches and electrical components, and that you can't count on certain Gigabytes for future-proofing.
i'm filing this under AMD protecting its mobo vendors because early adoption is painful. what was (barely) good enough for 3.0 isn't for 4.0

Remember the golden rule of statistics: A personal sample size of one is a sufficient basis upon which to draw universal conclusions.
Upload the computer to Dropbox and provide a link to it so others may download it to examine and give advice for repairs.

Meh. Oh well, I wasn't particularly concerned about this. Now, if they disable CPU support, we've got a different situation.

The reason I recently bought an X470 is exactly because I don't care about PCI-E 4.0. I really don't mind if it's not supported on older chipsets. As long as the CPUs work.

Not a real loss. The idea that it could work always seemed sketchy at best anyway.

What would be much more useful to know is whether XFR and PBO 3 will work on older boards or not.

Hey, I'm going to have to buy a mobo anyway, and they just announced PCIE4.0 NVME drives, so that's a feature I want.

I calculated the odds of this succeeding versus the odds I was doing something incredibly stupid... and I went ahead anyway.

If it's not coming out for the PC, it's dead to me.

My concern is whether or not the older boards will run @ spec with the faster and more core loaded chips. Is the additional power requirement soley for PCIE or both PCIE4 + Ryzen 3?
