[AnandTech] Nintendo Reveals Handheld-Only Switch Lite: With a New NVIDIA SoC?

Source: https://www.anandtech.com/show/14629...new-nvidia-soc

Quote:
Nintendo has announced a new version of its Switch game console that only works in handheld mode, yet it is considerably more compact, comes at a lower price point, and works for a longer time on one charge. One of the intrigues about the Switch Lite device is that it might be powered by a new version of NVIDIA Tegra SoC made using a more advanced process technology.

The Nintendo Switch Lite comes with a 5.5-inch LCD featuring a 720p resolution and has built-in controllers that have the same layout as Nintendo’s Joy-Con controllers. The console will support local and online multiplayer modes and will allow up to eight people to play at once anywhere with Wi-Fi. When it comes to style, the gaming device will come in grey, yellow, and turquoise to attract gamers with different tastes. As far as availability is concerned, the Switch Lite will ship on September 20 and will cost $199.99 (down from $299.99 in case of the fully-fledged version).

I'm loving the design refresh. And the $100 cheaper price is just the cherry on top.

I would have bought this if you could get a separate dock to connect it on the TV. Not a fan of the Dpad on the joycons so this would have been perfect.

Isn't that the whole point?
It won't have TV connection else it would eat up on the switch market.
You can always find a 2nd hand switch for 100$ cheaper than listed price, so if you need a switch but don't want to buy a switch because of the price, you can buy second hand and use the pro controller.

I would love though if they added cloud gaming saves. So you can have the same saves on the lite and normal.
That way you aren't stuck on the same console when you have a few kids who want to play.

I'm just having a bit of a hard time understanding this move. The Switch Lite does not have:

1.) HD Rumble
2.) Detachable Joycons (This means you need to buy an additional set of full-fledged Switch Joycons if you want to play games that require motion controls)
3.) Docking Support (This means no external displays)
4.) Multi-tablet game support
5.) Kickstand (So even if you DO buy extra joycons you can't stand it up without a third-party case)
6.) Probably some other things I missed.

And you are only saving $100 by giving up all of that? I think it would have been a real player at $159 or even $179, but it just doesn't seem worth it to me.

Edit: Here's to hoping that since the rumors of a "Switch Lite" were true that the rumors of a "Switch Pro" with more CPU / GPU power will come true.

It really does not make any sense that this doesn’t have a TV dock.
You can pair it with Joycons or the Pro controller, it’s still a Tegra SoC with HDMI support on silicon (there’s no way Nintendo is the only one using this), 100% of the original Switch “TV mode” hardware functionality is in the Switch Lite.

The only reason Nintendo would refuse to allow TV mode is if they’re dead set on forcing people to buy two systems.
I will still buy one, but that’s because I had always planned on having multiple Switch units (neither of them being the launch model, I will end up having a Switch Lite and the inevitable Switch Pro sometime in the next year or two).

I think you missed the entire point of what this is. It's basically the next-generation of Nintendo DS hand-held consoles. It doesn't NEED anything else than this.

The 3DS cost $250 when it launched, then was cut to $170 after a minute, then the 3DS XL came out and was set at $199 like this new console is... soooo... I don't see the issue?

For the people not getting it, its pretty much the replacement of the New 3DS XL.

As for me I hope we get something about a Pro/S model soon. If not I might finally crack and pick up normal one this holiday.

lol I thought I was the only one doing this! Been waiting for a pro/refresh version of the switch for a while, I even have a handful of games for it. If no news comes out about a new version this year, I'll just get an OG one this december.
