As someone who actually was waiting for an upgrade from the 980Ti, the only reasonable option last year was to just abandon PC gaming. There is no freaking way Nvidias 2018 product stack was worth buying into.
But instead of being reasonable out of desperation and spite I bought Vega 64, and some residual resentment is probably why there’s a $1200 Samsung TV on my wall right now as well (Xbox One X games in 4KHDR look fantastic, also most UHD Blurays get a discount every few months).
As long as you enjoy the DX12/Vulkan titles on the market Vega 64 was still a less horrific choice than RTX.
5700XT and 2070 Super are now finally the first “decent” options, but still not what a lot of people would consider a proper upgrade from 980Ti (still only 1080Ti performance, just at a lower price).
A $200 price drop on 2080Ti or significantly upgraded 2080 Super would have done a lot to restore faith in Nvidia, instead Nvidia is demonstrating perpetual obstinance and further fuelling my commitment to upgrade to Big Navi next year.
It’s going to end up being a five year wait for a lot of people.
