Edited - thought I'd add who I was replying to so I didn't sound completely off the wall.

How about all those people looking to finally upgrade from their 980Ti's or even older cards? They should just go for the regular 2080 instead of the brand new Super... Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. There are people out there looking to upgrade and nVidia is just giving them another of many options.
Where did he say anything about a brick? Cus the moment you shorted your 1080ti it was no longer a 1080ti and became a brick.

It will be called "Titan X" obviously

As someone who actually was waiting for an upgrade from the 980Ti, the only reasonable option last year was to just abandon PC gaming. There is no freaking way Nvidias 2018 product stack was worth buying into.

But instead of being reasonable out of desperation and spite I bought Vega 64, and some residual resentment is probably why there’s a $1200 Samsung TV on my wall right now as well (Xbox One X games in 4KHDR look fantastic, also most UHD Blurays get a discount every few months).
As long as you enjoy the DX12/Vulkan titles on the market Vega 64 was still a less horrific choice than RTX.

5700XT and 2070 Super are now finally the first “decent” options, but still not what a lot of people would consider a proper upgrade from 980Ti (still only 1080Ti performance, just at a lower price).

A $200 price drop on 2080Ti or significantly upgraded 2080 Super would have done a lot to restore faith in Nvidia, instead Nvidia is demonstrating perpetual obstinance and further fuelling my commitment to upgrade to Big Navi next year.
It’s going to end up being a five year wait for a lot of people.

If you are forced to buy a card now, as long as it is at lower level of what you usualy would buy, so often a 2060-2070 super as long as it is a cheap version, will probably not feel so bad later on. As i see it, it will probably not be until late 2020 before both Intel and Nvidia have introduced their cards, so the real competitive dance would continue through 2021 or at least first part with updated versions later in the year. So it is sorta endless.

Of cause the newer players need to get use to the depreciation

If I were forced to buy a card, I would'nt bother with anything released currently. Get this and wait for the next cycle.

Agreed at this point it is best to just wait till the next series of cards releases and hopefully there is some stiff competition by then to lower some of these ridiculous prices. Good thing my 1080 Ti does a decent job running games @ 1440p and even some at 4K that it can buy me sometime.

This is why I bought a used 750 (non-Ti) off of Craigslist long ago as my insurance policy.

If I were forced to buy a card, I'd probably just rage quit PC gaming lol. These days I spend 10 hours watching TV/movies/Youtube for every hour of gaming I do, so you could say I've basically checked out.
