The problem, and as it seems what people refuse to believe, is that this won't be the last iteration of these vulnerabilities.

Funny how some people are expecting new CPUs from Intel to save face when none of them will be fully protected against these attacks.

Prescott times are upon Intel, they won't truly compete until Jim Keller's new arch comes out. Those new exploits come out each month, it seems.

The kernel code added yesterday to mainline by Thomas Gleixner commented on the issue:

"The performance deterioration departement is not proud at all to present yet another set of speculation fences to mitigate the next chapter in the 'what could possibly go wrong' story.

The new vulnerability belongs to the Spectre class and affects GS based data accesses and has therefore been dubbed 'Grand Schemozzle' for secret communication purposes. It's officially listed as CVE-2019-1125."

Gotta keep the sense of humour.

I thought Keller was over at graphics with Kaduri?

And still I know people who don't care and just want to have an Intel CPU just because benchmarks tell them that Intel is faster.

Just so, two Hardware review sites come to mind that recommend the i3-7350K unlocked dual-core for $180 in 2017. Those two sites also somehow missed Athlon 64 kicking intel's rear. And the whole compiler crippling none Genuine Intel saga.

They call this a cutting-edge attack.

Quote: "The SWAPGS Attack circumvents all known mitigation techniques deployed against previous side-channel attacks on vulnerabilities in speculative execution".

Only sure way to prevent it is to disable Hyperthreading (HT).
