Zalman made an all copper with copper fin heat sinking it was in a flower arrangement. Made of less material than the current towers of these days.
At the time the debate was the same copper vs aluminum. The same principles apply today aluminum dissipates heat faster than copper and copper absorbs heat faster than aluminum. Hence all the copper base aluminum fin versions we see today more efficient and less costly.
The trick is the connection fin to heat pipe, I would like to see a heatpipe/fin made out of one piece of material.

You can only stack 4x8mm heatpipes (~= 240W TDP rating) on a typical 35-37mm square IHS unless it's HEDT so you'd probably have 6mm (~40W each) ones as well. Maybe 3x8mm and 2x6mm , which is 260W TDP rating total. That's why there's diminishing returns after you have 6x6mm or 4x8mm (original Thermalright Silver Arrow). You can see this on the Gelid The Black Edition where the second layer of heatpipes doesn't make it massively better. The same goes for the Coolermaster TPC812 (6 heatpipes with a vapor chamber on top of it), where the fin area wasn't as large.

If anything for the Zen2 chiplets something like Coolermaster V8 GTS's vapor chamber baseplate would probably be quite effective. The issue with the V8 GTS is the fin area at the outer two fin stacks and the amount of bends in the heatpipes. Each bend reduces the power dissipation.

On Threadripper we see the massive 7-8 heatpipe count on the Wraith Ripper and Silver Arrow TR4 have benefit.

I bet what this means is they are about to release a new gen. Usually, when new brows come out, they make Redux edition of the now "old" tech. Now, they'll probably "chromax" them first and then "redux" them to make more money that way.

Just FYI, if that build is coming up soon, I wouldn't get my hopes up. Noctua usually takes quite a while between showing of a new product and actually releasing it.

I get the brand loyalty for Noctua, they make good stuff and have great costumer service. But they're not the only one making high quality, high end coolers.

what? That's news to me. Unless you are talking about a volume of aluminum vs a volume of copper and how the aluminum is less massive or some stretch like that, thermal conductivity should apply equally in both directions. All of that is moot anyway since it's limited by the ability of the air to absorb heat off the metal anyway. I guess you could technically say that the lower thermal conductivity allows the aluminum to get hotter over time leading to a larger delta between the air and aluminum, but that's kind of defeats the purpose.
