PB2 = Precision Boost 2
PBO = Precision Boost Overdrive

AMD does not differentiate the use of PBO and overclocking (as we may considered):

"Because Precision Boost Overdrive enables operation of the processor outside of specifications and in excess of factory settings, use of the feature invalidates the AMD product warranty and may also void warranties offered by the system manufacturer or retailer."

The Prime X470 Pro has 4 settings for PBO - auto, enabled, disabled, manual. Default is auto.

Clearly it's not disabled if all 8 cores are running at 4.4Ghz with it enabled and only 2 cores with it disabled. Which ever manufacturer it is, they're abusing PBO.

It doesn't run all 8c at 4.4 at the same time...it moves from core to core...at least that's what I see. Yes, sometimes there are more than one core at 4.4 at the same time. As I said, that was with PBO disabled.....I don't really know man....all I can tell you is what I see happening.

Steve at GN is the one that stated that Auto is Off by default. He does say, "If everyone is following spec."

@The Stilt....thanks for the clarification.

This will be interesting and i wonder if it will cause some instability in certain chips as none are created equal and some far worst than others.

Mmm what? It's been known since launch. Doesn't matter if YouTube faces popularize it to the masses or not and they do make mistakes while doing that, or even over hype/inflate issues for their own gains really. YT can be a bit of a drama club at times to get "moar of dem views" = money.

Getting reliable data from a mass of people is close to impossible, everyone always messes up some setting whether they know it or not because mobos are often not set to specs on default settings. Even on a large sample it gets skewed.

Can't say I'm impressed at the x570 pricing vs VRM + cooling and UEFI/software (= performance) quality. Maybe in half a year after launch they will iron out the kinks. Pretty normal. Early adopters = beta testers.

I agree with a lot of what you said. I also noticed this behavior after getting my CPU, and updating the bios to the latest. I tested this over 5 bios'. While not perfect...I did the best job I could do. To me this is a bios/AGESA issue, not the actual CPU. It's capable of hitting the advertised clocks.

Link to my results, if anyone wants to look:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing

EDIT: Personally, I don't feel it's really a huge issue. I'm sure these CPU's hit the clocks....we just can't capture it correctly(or consistently) using software.

This. Performance is great at whatever clocks I am getting.

I have a big bang house. I had all the materials for my new house brought in and dumped on a vacant lot. I took a stick of dynamite, lit the fuse on fire and tossed it into the pile of materials. BOOM went the explosion and when the dust settled I had a new house! Amazing isn't it?

der8auer did the same with the x299 VRM heatsinks. Look how the quality of VRM cooling has improved on nearly every board.

Sometimes on aliexpress I randomly run into old x58 boards and by God they are pretty. The color scheme is kinda "out there" but the design is just cool. So many proper heatsinks.
