High-speed + High-core-count seems to have diminishing use cases, not to mention the premium. Who are the target audiences? Streamers and audio/video editors who need real-time previews? Game developers who do lots of debugging? Pure gamers should be tapering off at 8-12 threads already.

So, any speculation on the price? Since these are binned for speed, I'm sure that's going to come with a premium price attached to it. I'm thinking 550 to 600? Or perhaps Intel will try to lock it in at 530, to compete with the R9 3900X? Even if they do lock it in at the same price point as the 3900X, I would rather buy the 3900X and have 4 more cores / 8 threads. I do video editing and sound production work on my PC as well as gaming. Having all the cores and threads I can is useful for my work.

I'm still on first gen R5 1600, but looking to upgrade to the 3600 or 3700X. For 330 bucks for an 8 core / 16 thread CPU, I just can't see spending anymore than that for anything Intel has, even if they are better at gaming. With an I7 9700K being the closest thing in price (365) to the 3700X, and it doesn't have hyper-threading, Intel CPUs across the board just don't look very appealing to purchase.

And as someone else mentioned, this does remind me of the FX series 9590, it was pretty useless. Some people like to argue that they just plug the CPU in and don't OC, but anyone spending that kind of cash on an unlocked Intel is going to OC it. Most of the 9900K's already 5Ghz+, and with the price premium (I'd be shocked if Intel sold it close to 500), it's not worth it.

With the boost clock patch rolling out at the same rumoured release date of the 3950X, we're looking at a hefty 4.7Ghz boost clock. The 3900X is already extremely close to the 9900K in gaming @108 0p using a 2080 Ti (after the latest chipset drivers, the 'gap' is only 3.8% on average going by TPU) they're almost neck and neck.

The 3950X with another 100Mhz boost clock and apparent performance improvements from the boost clock patch will be even closer to the 'gaming king' CPU and demolish it in anything else. 9900KS included of course.

* Ryzen 7 2700X * Gigabyte Aorus X370 Gaming 5 *16GB Crucial Ballistix Elite DDR4 3200Mhz memory * 500GB Samsung 960 EVO NVMe M.2/500GB Crucial BX300
EVGA FTW2 1070 Ti * NZXT S340 Elite White

I don't think there will be much improvement in games with the 3950x, boost depends on temps and current and that's an awful lot of tiny cores to pack into that much space.. the 3900x has two cores worth of space per die that are inactive and aids in cooling the boosting cores.

If they do price it at 530ish, I don't know if it would be that enticing, considering most 9900K CPUs can already do 5Ghz all-core anyways. And at that point, I'd just buy the 3900X. At least you get 12 cores instead of 8. They can't match AMD prices.
