AMD has made few missteps from a PR standpoint vs Intel in the past few years. I highly doubt they will give them marketing fodder of "Intel has better HEDT support". It would be a bad look for AMD to drop support of a platform faster than Intel. Historically AMD has championed long-term platform support (since socket 754 / 939 / 940...) - I cannot see them wanting to cede that title to Intel in any of the market segments.

Aside from the PR perspective, those of us who use HEDT for work or related tasks will certainly be taking the long term viability into account. Whoever's solution is viable for longer is the better investment.
Agreed. However if you'll remember some of the "mistakes" made by some motherboard vendors on B450/X470 in regards to BIOS size limits and 3000-series support...

I dropped quite a lot of money on my Designare with the expectation that it'll last me a looong time, so hopefully just two more months to go until we find out.

AMD will sell the 24 cores for $1499, my guess.
AMD TR3 will stop at 32 cores for $1999

Intel CL-X will start at 10 and end with 28 cores.
My guess on their msrp
10 cores $599
12 cores $649
14 cores $799
16 cores $999
18 cores $1249
20 cores $1499
22 cores $1649
24 cores $1849
26 cores $1999
28 cores $2299

The current Threadripper 24-core, the 2970WX, is listed for $1,250 at newegg and $800 at MicroCenter, so I seriously doubt it will be $1,500. $1,000 is much more likely.

Also worth noting, Intel only have chips up-to 18-core (HCC Die) on Socket 2011-3. If you want bigger chips, you need to get Socket 3647 for XCC dies and hex-channel support. There are two non-server boards for Socket 3647, and they cost $1,800-1,900.

I wonder if the x399 boards are compatible with gen4 pcie. Are all the TR4 pcie lanes coming off the CPU?

I see there are many new chipsets... I wonder what the pricing structure will be? Also, are we thinking 12 phase VRM minimum requirement for new TR chips?

Yes/no/kinda/depends.

TR has 64 lanes; x16/x8/x16/x8 and x4/x4/x4 for M.2 that all come from the CPU directly... And an x4 for X399. Some motherboards have additional x4 or x1 lanes from the chipset.
