Ho, I meant I needed the lane before getting a Dark and the 10980XE. I'm all good now
Extreme Encore was my goal, but for that price, I 'had' to get the Dark since it will be mostly about benching anyway (with some games here and there) and I love it in general !

The specifications on paper alone show that the CPUs are more than capable over what Intel can offer in the HEDT market.

If you choose to ignore HEDT loads and stick to games only, please refrain from posting. You are starting to leak your Intel fanboyism.

Any chance anyone could answer this question? What are the main reasons to get a higher end board apart from features? Overclocking, I'd assume? If you're not overclocking much, would a cheaper X299 board be OK, or not really? For example, I'm looking at a Gigabyte Aorus Gaming 3 that I can get for a decent price.

How does the X299 Dark compare to the Asus RVE Encore? If we want the highest, most stable OC on the 10980Xe, which board would you recommend and why?

More expensive boards have beefier VRMs and better VRM cooling. Most of the offered features are pretty niche. A normal cheaper board will be able to run this stock without issues. Just make sure the BIOS supports it.

A bit hard to answer that question without Encore reviews being live. My guess is that they will be the same for ambient cooling regarding CPU oc. Dark should take the lead for RAM oc and XOC in general. Encore offers better i/o and is a more "complete" board in that regard. It's missing one PCIe 16x though.

Both should be excellent boards. As I said, I had the opportunity to get the Dark for 300€, it heavily impacted my choice

Advice for i7-9800x

Hi, i bought the x299 board from evga. At the moment i am using i7-4790.
My plan is buying 10900x, as i saw the price at proshop.de 670-680 Euro:
Should i get the 9800x for 400€. 8 or 10 cores should be enough for me. Will there be a big difference between these cpus? should i save 270€.
Thanks

There's two odd things about the dark from my experience owning and testing vs other boards is it doesn't support XMP profiles with bclk adjustment you have to do it manually which is whatever I guess. Other thing is it scores worse than all other X299 boards in FF14 benchmark for some reason, I'm not sure why but since that is main game I play it weighs heavily into my decision making lol.
