Micron announced its X100 SSD today, which its bills as the world's fastest SSD with 9GB/s of sequential performance in both read, write, and mixed workloads, and up to 2.5 million random IOPS.

Micron touts the new PCIE 3.0 x16 device as delivering an impressive 8 microseconds of latency, which is faster than Intel's claimed 10 microseconds of latency from its Optane SSDs. The SSD is also notably faster at sequential and random performance than any of Intel's competing Optane devices.

Pcie3x16, 8 pin power connector. Micron isn't messing around. It's good they're finally making it. I wonder if they will make dimms?

I more interested in when will consumer 3DX SSD comes from Micron?

We need something that beat 905p in both performance and pricing.

WOW. Thats awesome. This makes Threadripper even more important with all its PCI-E Lan goodness.
GPU = 16x
SSD1 = 16x
SSD 2 = 4x (nVme)
10GBE = 4x

Thats 40 lanes right there and one could need a second GPU or more drives or another add in card.
Poor Intel offering only 40 CPU lanes.

Interesting. It's sure to be expensive. I'd like to see this stuff drop in price to compete with SSDs, but that will probably take a long time.

x16! Very nice, all Intels are limited to x4. It sounds like it also has a better controller. It should be PCIe 4.0 though.

I really want a 1TB one, hopefully they are cheaper than Intel's 1TB offerings too, but probably not.

Interesting read, that article. Intel facing more competition, what could possibly go wrong

So how long do you guys think it will take to get to the desktop market? Per the last paragraph in that article:

Quote:
Unfortunately, Micron's X100 series is aimed at the data center for now, meaning we won't see an equivalent for the desktop market in the near term. However, with Micron now finally making headway on its own 3D XPoint-infused SSDs, we hope that will change in the future. Micron says it is sampling the drives to early customers now, but hasn't shared information about the various capacity points or pricing.

I also found this: Source: Motley Fool - Micron Technology Inc (MU) Q4 2019 Earnings Call Transcript

MU earnings call for the period ending August 29, 2019.

Quote:
David Zinsner -- Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer:

Starting in fiscal Q1 and continuing for the foreseeable future, we expect to incur an underutilization impact of approximately $150 million per quarter, with about half of the impact consisting of non-cash items. Over time, as our 3D XPoint business ramps, this underutilization impact will be mitigated, but as you can expect, it takes time to commercialize a new breakthrough technology.
