[TH]AMD Threadripper 3970X and 3960X Review: Taking Over The High End

AMD dropped the Threadripper bomb today.
"Intel's seemingly-endless delay in transitioning to the 10nm node for the desktop, not to mention a new architecture beyond Skylake, has left the industry ripe for disruption. As a result, AMD's new Threadripper 3000 processors wade into the upper segment of the HEDT market uncontested."

LTT review:

No wonder the pricing went up, its justified, these chips are absolute monsters. They're pretty decent for gaming as well.

You cant buy them though.

Afaik, even big stores like amazon, are allocated only 20 boxes each.

You should have no problem getting one before Zen3 comes out next year though.

It does exactly what you would think it does. Smashes intel in heavily multi-threaded workloads, and loses in single threaded workloads. Also less power hungry compared to intel.

Long and the short of it: If you are doing renders in Blender or 3dsmax, get threadripper. If you are playing CoD, get intel 9900k for best performance.

It loses in single threaded workloads to the i9 9900KS which is a different segment entirely (it takes a 5 Ghz CPU to do that and not by that much). Why would you even look at a TR3 platform for single threaded workloads? Honest. The only comparable Intel CPUs are the i9 10980XE and the Xeon W 3175X and both lose in single and multithreaded workloads.

And burn the i9 10980XE in a dumpster fire which is the whole picture of the HEDT market right now. Why bring up the i7 9900K at all?

Bullet points.(CoD!) This mantra will be repeated constantly for the next period.

No one would have dreamed AMD would not only catch-up to Intel so soon, but to surpass them in performance. Well done AMD.
