[PCWorld] We benchmark AMD's mobile Ryzen 7 vs. Intel's mobile Core i7: Which is the best laptop processor?

Quote:
The best laptop processor is...
In some ways, this laptop CPU fight mirrored the recent Deontay Wilder vs. Luis Ortiz II title fight, in that Ortiz won every round. In real life, however, Wilder knocked out Ortiz with a massive blow, while Intel’s Ice Lake Core i7 won every benchmark contest, and knocked out the Ryzen 7 Surface Edition in battery life and price.

It’s a unanimous decision: After comparing Intel’s mobile Core i7 (Ice Lake) vs. AMD’s Ryzen 7 mobile in essentially identical laptops, Core i7 easily wins as the best high-performance notebook processor currently available. If you’re considering a Surface Laptop 3, buy the Surface Laptop 3 for Business, available to buy directly from Microsoft.

But wait: Remember how we noted that the Ryzen 7 is based on the older Zen+ architecture, and the older 12nm architecture? Deep in the bowels of AMD’s chip labs, the mobile Ryzen’s training—working out, getting fit, running through deep snow while carrying logs—getting in fighting shape to move into the 7nm weight class. (Just go with the metaphor.) AMD’s been pounding Intel hard with its 7nm desktop chips; will it do the same in mobile?

Sounds like there’s gonna be a rematch.
Overall Ice Lake is very impressive.

But, if you want to game using the igpu - you got to go with the Vega 11.

I am surprised AMD does not offer more cores on mobile. Plus, I would figure it would do better in that application, considering for desktops it consumes less power than today's Intel architectures, per unit of performance

If it can't smash a Zen+ design at 12nm in their last stronghold Intel should better pack up and start growing potatoes. Pretty much what AMD did in the Bulldozer era.

A shame no desktop part will ever see the light of day.

Too bad amd is 1 gen behind on mobile chips.

Really sad

I disagree.

It's competing against AMD's older architecture and node and is only around 13% faster in CPU based workloads and costs significantly more money.

Zen 2 architecture + 7nm AMD mobile chips will take the fight right to Ice Lake based on this display.

The only area i see Intel maintaining a clear lead is battery life. Intel have done a great job on power efficiency in the mobile market.

I expect AMD 7nm mobile chips to match / surpass Ice Lake in terms of performance, CPU and Graphics, but still fall short on battery life and some additional features like thunderbolt.

It's interesting that Intel's mobile chips use less juice than AMD's, but it's reversed for desktop chips (i.e. 10980XE vs 3950X, for the same performance, AMD uses less power)

You're leaving out the Ryzen notebook has better cooling than the smaller Intel Surface laptop.

And that's the fault of the manufacturer, not AMD or Intel? I don't see how this is a valid point in any real manner, given it's *pretty damn easy* to set up two machines with similar cooling capability.

it's the reviewers fault not the manufacturer. At the end of the day a smaller laptop with worse cooling is still faster than an AMD laptop with better cooling. With better cooling an Ice Lake chip performance will increase over a Zen+ laptop.
