It's the only recorded bit of his last AMD presentation that I could find on Youtube (which in its entirety was hilarious from my pov). If you want to argue semantics with the creator of the video who titled it that way, you're more than welcome to do so.

how many posthole diggers do you have moving the goalposts all the time?

but but but his team left . .but but but it had compute (ignoring the MSRP at launch). . .but but but . . .

I don't expect anything drastically new, just migrated/sold engineers from AMD to Intel where they can work with a bigger budget to burn. Similar stuff that AMD has or has shelved due to budget constraints, remade at Intel with a bigger budget.

Ah no but you see they *said* they had plans to do it, so it's real! Really, for serious!

Looks like you didn't watch the video.

Yes, his team was pulled from the Vega project to work on Sony's Navi project which was one of the major contributing factors why he left AMD. I guess we should completely ignore all the other markets just because of PC gamers.

You need neither excuse or blame him, this isn't anything new..
Relatively young (back then), skilled, competent, overly ambitious, with quotes aplenty showcasing it. Wants 'disruptive' and large audience, simultaneously (also quoted on that), times have it that's AMD for him; again, back then.

Be it entirely a budget issue or only partly one, ie with himself to blame as well, this doesn't happen; he expected more people on his team, more money, more time (and in part, we can excuse him for that, it's not like the graphics dpt of AMD is anything stellar to begin with) and he wasn't given much/any of it.
Enter one more hop, to the next opportunity for him to be what he's always wanted to be; 'disruptive' + affecting the millions. Bonus too, they pay a hell of a lot better, plus they're offering him a cool new title, appease his ego a bit. Thus the jump.

Neither the first nor the last person with megalomaniacal tendencies, excused or otherwise. Sole difference is the era, as we saw it occuring through "twitter", pseudo-professional "blogs" (lol) and "instagram".
Minus the drama (fanboys included mind you, some of you had a part in this)? Like i said, nothing new.
And nothing to tell us whether he's as good as he thinks he is or not. In situations like these, there are so, so many factors, you just cannot know. I know he must be good enough for a colossus like Intel to not only hire him, but elevate him this high up; that i do know.
Also, he was hired right before Intel started shifting its focus; this must have affected him, hence the latest "compute"-centric hints he's been letting. We gonna blame him for that too? when it turns out it's not for "gamers" after all?

You don't get this high unless you have said tendencies. Excused, or otherwise
Nothing new minus the way it's perceived; overblown now, and with plenty of drama on top for good measure. Soshul media, we all have rights, etc. He is who he is.
(btw, while you're here flaming or supporting him, he's probably earning millions. How much do you earn? Just to put it all under perspective, lol)

Pride, honour and purity.

I would have posted the full version of the original, but AMD may have carefully removed all instances of it from the 'Net (it was little more than embarrassing for them). That said, there's also this, but it's in Hindi:

Vega 56 @ $400 did crush but it was never $400 thanks to mining. Same thing with R290 and R290X. Both never really shinned because of mining. I wanted to get a Vega64 but getting 1080Ti was cheaper and easier.

deep learning wasn't what raja said, maybe you should watch a 23 second video yourself. and kettle meet pot; there are other markets than compute for graphics cards, ya know for like GRAPHICS.

i admit to slightly underestimating you; you don't use posthole diggers, you have the goal posts on wheels.

if it wasn't for the mining boom, AMD might have been no more.

I don't think Raja did a bad job at AMD. And his selling of Vega wasn't that bad either. I was all hyped for Vega as well, but that was more to do with Adored and the like. I bet with double the manpower we could have seen a working primitive shader and better high bandwidth cache controller use, or more uses of rpm having been implemented by devs. But we won't know because that time has come and gone.

AMD had Hawaii to compete with Kepler. Then Nvidia makes each of their shaders 40% more effective with Maxwell, so AMD puts GCN all of the way to max shaders, has to use HBM to stay in the power budget and still comes up short. Costs too much to make so they make something profitable to sell, Polaris. Which could have been sold as "economical Hawaii". They have a node transition coming up, still are limited to 4096, so they have to increase clocks and add features to compete with the upcoming Pascal. And after Pascal was released with another performance boost like an industry in it's infancy, Raja got his staff for his main competitive project cut to a fraction. He probably got more per employee than Nvidia did.

He could have been straightforward and said Vega was overpriced for what it was but they had to charge that much because it still cost a lot to make. Instead he tells just the good side. Not the greatest, but not that bad.

I don't hear people criticizing Su for Ryzen still not being as good at gaming after 2 revisions. Or 5ghz, or Navi mcm, or even cfx that used to be a thing.

Right now AMD is on contract for the Frontier using Epyc and Instinct. Intel is making the Aurora from new stuff, stuff so new that doubters are the norm. From node, to cpu arch to gpu arch to oneapi. A whole lot of new is going to be coming out on the Intel side of things and it won't be just MOAR COARS.

Aurora is supposed to have a lot of AI, it wouldn't surprise me that if you combined that with the rasterizer part, the whatever-ops exceeded current Nvidia whatever-ops. You know AMD can't compete on the basis of whatever-ops so maybe Raja was just bug eyed at numbers that most likely won't translate into fps. He's probably working with these big chips of new node that put out 6 or 7 hundred whatever-Tops apiece every day and some of it just spilled out. Give a guy a break.
