Depending on whose lap the laptop is resting, using the whole chassis for a heat sink will have a wide variation in effectiveness. Excuse the pun.
To some degree, this has always been a factor in system cooling. Even in a desktop, you get some heat dissipation from the case itself through radiation. The air inside is heated and it transfers heat to the enclosure which then surrenders it to the outside air, assuming the ambient temp is less than that of the interior air.
